Was Martin Luther a vegetarian?!

Question: Was Martin Luther a vegetarian?
That is Martin Luther hundreds of years ago, not M.L. King Jr. He is listed on lists of famous people who were vegetarians but no evidence. Anyone have evidence?

I'm of German Lutheran descent. (My father and husband are both Lutheran, ELCA pastors) and I've not heard this. However, the previous answer makes sense, as I've heard people get Martin Luther King, Jr. and Martin Luther mixed up. (I even get amused when somebody mentions Martin Luther King in reference to MLK, Jr.)

However, my meat eating husband and I like the Luthers' tradition of homemade beer. The story goes that Katarina (Mrs. Luther) made it.

I typed in "martin Luther vegetarian" and really only found things regarding Martin Luther King, Jr.

Thanks for the link. I've bookmarked it and will show it to my husband, too. :-D

I highly doubt he was a vegetarian. If he was it was because there was not enough meat available or he was on some sort of religious fast. Martin Luther was a Roman Catholic priest so he probably abstained from meat on Fridays and other holy days.
I couldn't find any sources that listed him as a vegetarian though. There were quite a few that mentioned Dr. Martin Luther King jr. So maybe you just got the two mixed up.

Yes he was a vegetarian. There is proof in the way of documents from the era.
He identified with the higher levels of abstainance and adopted a vegetarian diet\

He was against indulgence, and at the time he was in the monastic life, meat was usually reserved for sick people.
He was against all forms of greed and corporal pleasure, which had been so prevalent in that time of the catholic church, he also devoted him self to fasting and purity in soul and body.
One can deduce that he was vegetarian, but what records exist from the 16th century? Not many..
