I'm new to vegetarianism. A week now. And I have seen many recipes that call for Tofu.?!
Answers:
How do you cook with it?
First you'll have to drain the tofu. What I do is wrap a (clean) dishtowel around the tofu block and set it on a plate, then set another plate on top of it, and then set a heavy can on top of the second plate. Let it sit like that for about an hour, or even overnight, and when you unwrap the tofu it will be ready to cook with or marinate.
The kinds of tofu used: extra firm, firm, and silken.
Extra firm is great for sauteing, baking, and roasting. Basically it's best when you have to be a bit rougher because it holds it's shape a little better.
Firm is good for soups and stews, but all of them are good for that actually.
Silken is best for desserts and making homemade vegan mayo.
Is it true that it's tasteless?
Yes, but that isn't a bad thing because you can make it taste however you want. Tofu is amazing at absorbing surrounding flavors. It's extremely versatile in any kind of cooking.
And what recipes do you like?
I like to make tofu scrambles, which is basically an egg scramble, sans egg. I use a lot of veggies (any I have on hand), and use a little sesame oil to flavor, soy sauce, and some ume vinegar (not completely necessary though).
You can do a lot of things with it. I'll link a couple of vegetarian cookbooks in the source box you could read.

Tofu is gross if it's not cooked well. I haven't prepared it much myself, but I love it in Chinese food with brown rice, vegetables, and spicy sauce-- as long as they fry the tofu so it's got some flavor and texture, not just mush. It's basically tasteless to start with. I've been vegetarian for nearly a decade and I don't eat much tofu so I'm probly not the best person to ask!
Vegetarian for nearly a decade.
It usually comes in a block, the recipes tell you how to cook with it.
It is almost completely tasteless, but the great thing about tofu (besides being extremely healthy) is its ability to absorb flavors. It can end up tasting delicious depending on the recipe :)
Vegan
You can baked, broil grill, or stir-fry tofu. Probably other methods I'm forgetting.
Make sure you press it before you cut it up and cook it, otherwise it will be muchy and gross.
Yes, it is tasteless, but it picks up other flavors very quickly- so once in recipes, the dishes are nto tasteless. Look up some marinades.
This is a good recipe:

Especially with rice and sweet&sour veggies.
Personally, I prefer the textures of tempeh and seitan a lot more than tofu! So try those out too :) And remember that none of these are necessary for a healthy or yummy diet.
