DO NOT get meat from giant eagle, kroger or walmart or any of those large chains because I can garentee you that meat is not the kind of meat you want to eat. Buy meat from farmers market when in season but other wise whole foods and trader joes have free range meat.

The only way you can be absolutely certain that the chickens you are consuming have been raised and slaughtered to your specifications, is to find a local farm and visit.

Some people will direct you to "free range", however this term is not regulated, and can mean a variety of things. The chickens could be outside for only minutes and it would still be considered "free range", as they had access to the outside.

As I said, the only way to be certain is too see how the chicken are raised yourself.

Read/check the packaging carefully. They will usually say "free range", or "USDA certified 100% organic, and a host of other terms that indicate such a chicken. Weekend markets or "farmer's markets" usually have that kind of chicken and the growers are right there to answer any of your questions.

Be aware however, that labels such as free range have different often loose interpretations and one "free range chicken" may still not be what you have in mind. But you can easily Google free range, organic chicken farmers and suppliers in your area.

The only way to be absolutely sure that the chicken is actually as you want, is to stop in a farmers yard where they are present and purchase one there.
Just because a store advertises free range or organic, does not mean they are.
Once you get one that is from a farm yard, you will never be satisfied with a normal store bird again.
During my childhood, in the depression years, we raised hundreds of chickens, and I have never got used to the store critters, and to this day my wife and I stop in various farms to buy our poultry.
If there are any Amish communities nearby, they are a good source.

Hi Jack you should look for a butcher that sells "free range" or organic chickens. these are allowed to roam free. i hope this helps, all the best. Rab

I am a Chef.
