Are rice and oats gluten free?!

Question: Are rice and oats gluten free?
I mean the actual grains themselves. I know oats can become contaminated via processing. What I am asking is gluten naturally occurring in oats or rice. I can't get a straight answer anywhere.

Both are gluton free.

Gluten does not naturally occur in rice or oats. You will see references to glutnious rice but that has to do with its sticky properties and not the gluten that it contains. Oats do not have gluten but some people that are intolerant to gluten do react to oats even if they are certified to be gluten free. The protein in oats is apparently close enough in structure to gluten to affect some people. Oats can also pick up contamination from wheat, barley or rye through the growing and processing of them unless the farmers and processors take care to keep the gluten containing grains out of the fields and away from processing equipment.

There are many types of rice, and I believe that all of them are gluten free. But the oats are questionable -- some say there may be a bit of a protein that could be a problem for those with gluten intolerance, but an insignificant amount. This link will give you a list of grains, and whether they are gluten free or gluten containing:

Hope that helps!

actually oats is also gluten free, and so is rice. gnc sells really good organic ones if you would like to find any.

Neither contain wheat, or wheat gluten, so both are gluten-free.

I do believe that rice is, but i'm not sure about oats.

yes both are gluten free. do a search on google for gluten free grains~
