Do vegans ever use soap?!

Question: Do vegans ever use soap?
I realize they use soap, I mean traditional soap that contains sodium tallowate. What about wax paper, crayons, margarines, paints, rubber, lubricants, candles, lipsticks, shaving creams, and other cosmetics that are made from tallow? For that matter, do they wear leather shoes or down jackets? I was wondering if they just don't eat meat that was from animals or do they refuse all other products made from the killing of animals.

Well, we do the best we can. I use non-leather accessories, vegan makeup/cosmetics,soap,personal lubricant, margarines, etc. I can't guarantee everything in my life is animal-free (roads we drive on use some animal products, etc), but if there is a vegan version of a product available, I like to support the business that carries it, and I buy those products.

it depends greatly on the individual. i, for instance have a vegan diet not a vegan lifestyle. i have leather interior in my vehicle, soap in my bathroom, wear make up, down comforter etc. it is very, very difficult to have a vegan lifestyle. i have a vegan diet for health reasons, i love animals, but i have not been able to incorporate the lifestyle. although, i know some vegans who have vegan lifestyles and are 99% effective at it, and for that i commend them.

lol yes we use soap, heres very short list of vegan bathroom products (there are MANY more though): http://wayfaringvegans.weebly.com/my-fav…

veganism is a lifestyle---so they will not use ANYTHING that causes an animal to be exploited in any way. (so no on the leather/down/wool jackets)

There are many vegan alternatives to tradition soap products. We like to be clean just like everyone else. There are entire industries that deal in vegan friendly products, you just have to do a little searching. :)

We try to avoid animal products and byproducts in everything. It's not always possible, but we do try.
A lot of vegan alternatives exist though.

Nope. I use Veganu soap. Its superior.

As far as the other things, there are vegan substitutes for them as well.

not all of them care about animals - they just don't want to put it into their bodies.

No, we like to walk around being dirty.

You do realize there are many vegan soaps, right?

most of that stuff is available here : http://veganessentials.com/

By some definitions, vegan just denotes a diet using no animal products; but some people say it denotes a whole lifestyle. Basically everyone agrees that vegetarian denotes just a diet.
Most ethical vegans do not use animal-tested products or anything like that, but I've met many ethical vegetarians that do, which doesn't make any sense to me personally.

Vegetarian = eats no slaughter products
Vegan = eats no slaughter products, meat, dairy, or eggs (by lifestyle definition, also doesn't purchase/use animal-tested products, leather/silk/wool/pearls, etc)

Personally, I do not use soap containing sodium tallowate. I carry a bottle of [vegan, non-animal tested] hand sanitizer in my purse to use at people's houses after rinsing my hands, and I have a non-animal-tested vegan hand soap from Trader Joe's in my bathroom.
I use soy candles from Pier 1 or online.
I get my makeup, shaving cream, shampoo, conditioner, etc, from vegan companies (also non-animal-tested).
I have no objection to wearing leather or other products I purchased before going veg*n- I would never purchase them again, but since they have been purchased already the industry has already been supported and the harm done- throwing them out will not help the animals or environment.

I make one exception: birth control.
I have amenorrhea (no, it's not from veganism; my iron levels are well within normal, and this has been happening on and off since long before veganism), basically because running 20-35 mpw as a 15 year old girl doesn't go over too well with your hormones. I have a family history of osteoporosis (grandma & aunt), and I'd rather not take that risk. I have tried gaining weight amd bf% and cutting down my mileage to 15mpw at one time- all of which I would be willing to maintain if it stopped me from taking bc, even if I could never run 'real' distance again- but it didn't work- basically, according to my OB/GYN, I don't have an option if I don't want to end up with serious health issues. It does make me feel awful.

Notes:
Crayons are usually made from paraffin wax, which is vegan.
Margarine is made from a blend of whey and vegetable oils- it does not contain tallow. Vegan margarine contains only vegetable oils.
