Vegan & Weight watchers?!

Question: Vegan & Weight watchers?
Is it ok to be vegan and so the weight watchers programs? Do I have too? If I eat a vegan diet and cut out bread and pasta I will lose right? Why are beans (black, kidney) so high in points on the weight watchers program? and hummus? Is hummus bad for me? Should I not eat it if I'm dieting?

It's possible to be vegan and follow the WW programme, yes.I've lost 30 pounds that way

Beans aren't high in points at all. 35 grams of kidney beans is one point. Since the minimum number of points anyone can be on is 29 per day, that doesn't seem too bad to me.

Tofu is low in points too at 1 point for 50 grams, regular or smoked.

All fruits and most vegetables are free of points.

Hummus is quite high in points at 1 for 10g; that's because it's high in fat - olive oil and tahini (sesame seed paste). But you can still eat it.

Bread and pasta aren't too high - 110g of cooked wholemeal pasta is 3 points, and it certainly isn't recommended that you cut out carbohydrates.

In fact the whole point of the WW programme is that there are no 'forbidden' foods

I haven't always been a fan, but I think the new programme is excellent

If you feel you're stuck at a certain weight and you really do need to lose weight, up the amount of exercise you do

EDIT @house125 - the points system changed in November 2010. Points values for most foods have changed, and the minimum number of points allowed now is 29.

I think WW point system is a good one, particularly since they changed it to make nutrient dense fruits and vegetables zero points. Previously, they acted like a calorie was a calorie was a calorie. So they didn't really care if you got 100 calories from fruit or from cotton candy. I see no problem with a WW diet provided you don't eat their processed food, and focus on eating a nutrient dense diet. However, before committing to WW, I recommend you look into Dr. Joel Fuhrman's "Eat to Live" diet. http://www.drfuhrman.com/ (vegan version) That's the best weight loss plan I've come across. My husband and SIL have had great success on it. My husband has lost 30 of the 50 lbs he needs to lose and is off one of his BP medications. My SIL never weighs herself but is off insulin and says her clothes fit looser.

Edit - Hummus is fattening due to the olive oil and tahini typically in a hummus recipe. For a lower calorie recipe that IMO tastes about 85% as good, leave out the olive oil and tahini, and make sure there's enough lemon juice and garlic in the recipe for good flavor. You can also add other ingredients to make it more interesting such as red pepper.

I loved WW. One of the great things about it is that it works with any kind of diet, since no food is forbidden. I was under the impression that beans were pretty low in points. Items like potatos and rice will be high because while they are low fat, they are also low fiber.

Try a different type of exercise, and see if that helps (assuming that you are able to exercise, that is).

I only had 21 points to work with when I did it.

beans are high in calories and fat. hummus IS mashed beans---so its high in calories and fat as well.

whether or not you will lose weight depends on what your diet is like NOW, read this: http://wayfaringvegans.weebly.com/will-i…

if you are "stuck" at a certain weight you need to build muscle and do some cardio. more muscle = higher metabolism. go for a run and then do some weight training.

Is it what you need? http://styleasy.info/41358/black-kidney Gooooood luck (:
