Why is protein mentioned ALL THE TIME?!

Question: Why is protein mentioned ALL THE TIME?
It's like people can't function without mentioning protein .
A few years ago, "good" and "bad" fats were the buzz words, now it's protein.
Why do people think you 're not getting enough if you don't eat meat, cheese or eggs all the time, or something else HIGH in protein, and why's it even mentioned anyway?
Protein is in so many foods, it's pointless to mention.

Unless you're eating a really bad bad sparse diet, which is another matter, you're going to be getting protein.

Why do people keep shoving it into the discussions- "make sure you get enough protein",
"that's not enough protein".

AGREED , FRIEND OF FRIEND OF.
iT IS MENTIONED BECAUSE TWENTY YEARS AGO, THE MEAT BOARDS AROUND THE WORLD CIRCULATED THE FEAR OF LACK OF IT, TO SELL MORE MEAT!!!, jUST LIKE THE dAIRY INDUSTRY CREATED a fear of not enough Calcium for profit reasons also.
Proof of this is....l have never met a person with protein deficiency have you?
Also Asians don't drink milk and 80% of them are allergic to it. The only Chinese with bone osteo troubles are the rich ones that eat a western diet!. Milk calcium is meant for cows and the acid with it, when ingested, leaches calcium slowly , from a humans body although there is a lot of it in milk. [sorry caps and in a rush].

There's really no certain number of protein you need daily. You really don't need that much, unless you plan on working out and building muscle. I read that if you don't eat after eating high protein, it usually turns into fat. You should be able to consume proteins just fine through soy, peanuts, almonds, beans, spinach, and other foods. You honestly don't need as much as people say you do.

If anything, vegans and vegetarians can lack in Omega 3 fatty acids and B12. You can get Omega 3's through plenty of sources, but not as much as flax seeds. Drizzling a little olive oil on your food before you cook it is good for Omega 3's. This is off topic, but an example of what you need and don't really need.

No, protein is not in so many foods. It's in GOOD foods. If something has 2 grams of protein, and 35 grams of sugar, the protein isn't really going to be worth much. Protein should best be eaten from foods that are healthy and kosher, like eggs, nuts, lean meat etc. Proteins are the building blocks of the human body, without them, your body cant function properly. I eat organic, whole foods and still don't get enough protein. Depending on your weight, you will need at least 50-90 grams of protein a day. It is important, don't underestimate it. Protein protein protein! I would just learn to deal with it if I were you. :)

Because most people have never learned how to think critically and they merely regurgitate what they read on the internet or see on television. I have lost count of how many times I have posted scientific material here which just gets ignored by certain users because they already have their confirming evidence from a blog they read once. And why change their opinion to incorporate facts when they are already so comfortable with their beliefs?

Fortunately some people do learn, they are merely ignorant (as opposed to wilfully ignorant or suffering from cognitive distortion) and they will learn if you educate them. But the protein thing was debunked 50 years ago, that's how old that myth is!

Seriously. I'm sick of hearing about it too. Every time someone comes on this thread with a question about protein, or a comment about how they aren't getting enough, I feel like banging my head against my keyboard and screaming.

Too many people are suckers for fads, and the meat and dairy industries pushing the protein. Two words: Brainwashed. Masses.

Plus no one knows squat about nutrition. Buy a book or take a class, people! >_< It's not that hard to learn something new and educate yourself for the betterment of yourself, society, and my sanity.

GAH.

What are you bugging about? Cause we need protein like we need carbs and fats. In today's society, people eat too much of simple carbs and "bad" fats and eat too little of good quality protein. That's why we need to be reminded over and over again. Now quit being a hater.

They're called Americans. Americans are idiots.

Meat eaters be live it's their trump card. They are too stupid to realize that you can get protein from sources other than meat

As far as veg'nism, I think it's because of the way we've learned about food/nutrition in school (At least in America....don't know about NZ or the Aussie area and I'm sure it's different in most parts of the world b/c Americans are idiots for the most part). In grammar school we're taught about the "four food groups" and grains, vegetables, & such are never mentioned as being part of the "meat"/"protein" group. It's rare that even legumes are mentioned. At least when I was in school (I'm almost 34 now).

I know exactly what you're saying, though. Unless you live in some third world country or have a severe eating disorder, there's pretty much no way that you could be protein deficient. Protein is in almost every food we eat as humans. Most Americans actually consume far more protein than needed, and since we're kind of known for being pretty sedentary and overweight or obese, it's not like we need extra protein for energy/stamina/etc. I mean, I'm vegan, and I don't ever go out of my way to consume extra protein. Even when exercising, all I need is water to keep me going, before, during, and after. But most of the the time I'll have a hearty breakfast shortly after...I'm a bicycler, so I'll usually come home, sit for a few minutes, shower, then have a good breakfast.

Because,
Protein is a necessary nutrient,
And, people get along with that quite well by eating meat,
By not eating meat, it isn't that simple.
However, it is very simple there are plenty of vegetarian foods that have protein.
You just have to make sure you are getting protein for yourself.
