Can you have an intolerance to only certain forms of soy?!

Question: Can you have an intolerance to only certain forms of soy?
I have no trouble eating edamame beans, but soymilk and tofu cause me stomach trouble. When i eat tofu, it feels like a balloon is in my stomach im so bloated. Soymilk causes me a similar bloating, but edamame beans do not bother me at all. Could this be in my head or can you have an intolerance to certain soy products and not the actual bean it comes from?

Yes edamame are underripe beans so there is probably a chemical change occurring in the beans as they ripen which you are allergic to. Either that or the processing as mentioned above. You could clarify this by eating ripe soybeans and seeing how they affect you.

If I have time I'll look into the difference in biochemistry between the juvenile and mature forms of the bean later today and post what I find, but no promises.

Yes, it could also be the processing OR the additives they put with it.
They can process it with calcium and/or salt etc etc.

If you're lucky enough to live near a Thai supermarket- I'd buy some of their plain, fresh tofu- it is 100% nicer and totally different from that nasty slimy flabby stuff in water-filled square tubs in the store.
Fresh tofu is like peanutty smelling bread, should be warm and fresh.
If you JUSt eat soymilk, with no casein, gums, brown rice syrup, sugar, or whatever they add to it, you might be fine.
Plain soybean milk, with nothing else.
