Being vegetarian Hong Kong, London, Sydney.?!
Answers:
Sydney would not be a problem at all (based on living in Melbourne most of my life) in terms of vegetarian restaurants, vegetarian options in non-vegetarian restaurants, and vegetarian products in supermarkets and healthfood shops, etc.
Hong Kong, not a huge problem, if you know exactly what you're buying. The language barrier would be the biggest concern. And be warned that some seemingly safe vegetables are actually cooked in oyster sauce.
London would be no problem, but it would be by far the most expensive city of the three.
EDIT: Alex - tofu is expensive(ish) in Australia IF you buy it from supermarkets and healthfood shops. But it's extremely cheap if you buy it from Asian (Chinese/Vietnamese) grocers. Same goes for tempeh. You've just got to know where to look for things.
If you're into quorn products, they were introduced into Australia last year (a bit behind the times, I know) and are available from the freezer section of the major supermarkets. (I don't buy them, as they contain egg and sometimes dairy products.) Sanitarium has a good range of supermarket-available products, all suitable for vegetarians, and several fortified with B12.
Most vegetarians don't live on the so-called vegetarian foods anyway. They just eat normal foods which happen to be vegetarian, and some occasionally eat the processed foods.
Been to all 3 cities, and the winner is.... Melbourne!
yeah come to melbourne, it is the vegan capital of australia. Melbourne uni rocks!
I have lived in sydney as a vego and it was quite accommodating. Ironically the one thing which was really difficult was accommodation. Rent prices in Australia are CRAZY because everybody always wanted to live in small houses so there is relatively little medium to high density housing in the city and property in the inner city suburbs are hence astronomically overvalued.
But as for food it was really easy. You can get tonnes of vego items from the typical supermarket. There are some great vego specific restaurants... Green Gourmet in Newtown was a favourite and Vegan Yum Cha on a sunday morning at Bodhi's in the Botanic Gardens was a real treat. Most omni venues cater to vegetarians. There is a pastry place at Bondi Beach which does AMAZING pies using shitake mushroom stalk and also the typical curried pies etc. Really good. There was also a chain called Shakespeare's Pies and they had a few vego and vegan products which were very good.
But as far as cities go I'll happily never return if I can avoid it.
I've lived in melbourne and live near london now. I found australia ok-ish for veggie food (especially eating out) but thought that in the supermarkets alot of veggie food was hard to find and SUPER expensive. Like double what I would pay for things like tofu in the uk.
London is expensive, but stay away from 'speciality health food shops' and try out the markets for cheaper food.
