Do you need to take tablets if you're a vegetarian?!

Question: Do you need to take tablets if you're a vegetarian?
Hi, My name is Lexis and I'm 14 years old. I decided to be a vegetarian (No meat at all and no products from animals that are treated badly e.g eggs) and I'm willing to eat tofu and stuff but I was wondering if we need the iron tablets :) Please help :)

You are probably getting better vitamins than people eating hamburgers. A kids multivitamin mix won't hurt.

Avoid getting all your protein from cheese as you can end up having over much fat. As a rule aim to eat all three parts of a plant (root crop, leafy stems and fruit or nut)

I would recommend taking a multi-vitamin that is rich in iron. Especially, since you are a female. Or just eat foods that are rich in iron naturally. You can get your iron from food sources that aren't just animals.

Dark, leafy greens (spinach, collards)
Dried fruit (prunes, raisins)
Beans, lentils, chick peas and soybeans
Artichokes

Some vegetarians do choose to take a multivitamin, or other supplement pills(the same as some meat eaters do). Getting your nutrients from actual food is much better than taking a supplement. Remember that you still need to eat properly, and a vitamin pills should simply be used as a supplement to a good diet.

It is not necessary to take supplements - you just need to make sure you get all the nutrients you needs from a good balanced diet.
I can recommend www.vegsoc.org.uk - they have a good wallchart that shows where to get all you need.
Good Luck
