In short no, it isn't good for you...
I'm sure people here will argue that its "not bad" but that's hardly saying that it is good for you. It is a decent source of protein and calcium... but there are better sources of both readily available.
Cheese is very high in fat. Lets say you eat a cup of diced cheddar cheese... that has a ridiculous 532 calories, 385 of which come from fat. That includes 28 grams of saturated fat, 139% of your recommended daily allowance.
That cup of cheese also has 139 milligrams of cholesterol and 820 mg of sodium... Mmm... sounds like a heart attack.
These things aren't good for you, and while there might be some things that are needed in cheese there is no good reason to get them from cheese.
Stopping eating cheese can be difficult as it contains addictive chemicals (called casomorphins) that affect your brain the same way morphine and opium does... hang in there and know that what you're doing will benefit you in the long run.
The only thing you need to remember about healthy eating is this:
The closer a food is to it's natural form, the better it is for you. Eat all foods in moderation.

There are many cheeses, made several different ways, and with many types of milk from mammals. The most popular in America is the cow.
Cheese can be made from human, goat, horse, fox, rat, cat, sheep milk and anything else that lactates. A restaurant in NY specializes in cheese made from the milk of humans(owners wife).
Most store-bought cheese is bad for people because it's processed: not real or natural cheese. This is full of salt, preservatives, food dye and artificial flavors. Another thing is that cows milk is VERY high in saturated fat and the fatty acid deteriorates bones, causing osteoporosis. The calcium and added vitamin D do not compensate for the tissue degeneration. Another thing many people overlook is that use of hormones and antibiotics in the dairy cows can make humans sick.
In small quantities, cow milk products it can be good for you. I'd say less than 1oz/30g a day, like a slice of cheese on a sandwich or yogurt.
Cheese from goats is a popular alternative.
Just a little on the side.
It does not matter if the food contains cholesterol, it is the fat type and quantities in the food that makes your body produce human cholesterol that effects your blood stream. Cheese contains hard milk-fat that makes your body produce the potential dangerous cholesterol type. When to much of it and combined with smoking or other oxidizing sources it can fasten and clog in your blood system.
So enjoy your cheese with a smile and goose bumps but do not over do it.
Cheese is a good calsium, vitamin A and D and protein source so if you enjoy it, do so!
It has good and bad elements. It contains saturated fat which can increase your bad cholesterol, however it is also a very good source of protein and calcium, which you need, as well as containing a healthy amount of potassium and several vitamins.
The answer, as with so many foods, is to choose a low fat variety and enjoy it in moderation.
Well yes it does contain both types of cholesterol but the point is that it isn't proven that cholesterol in your diet causes high cholesterol in your system. Many if not most people, when they eat cholesterol, produce less of their own to balance it out. So it could well be that in this point, it isn't unhealthy.
AnnaBean is right about type of cheese though - try to eat least processed and organic if you can, then there will be no nasty residues in it
Butter or Cheese or Ghee is full of bad cholesterol and fat. Its best avoided. You have to eat non-oily foods to keep your heart from strokes or healthy after you cross a certain age. Prevention is better than cure.
Cheese in moderation is great for your health
