Fish is considered a meat. Vegetables, grains and fruit are grown from the soil.

Acutally neutral by nature, you left some out of your definition of meat. When I google it I find this.

"1. The edible flesh of animals, especially that of mammals as opposed to that of fish or poultry."

I also find this
"2. . The edible part, as of a piece of fruit or a nut."

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/meat

So if vegetarians don't eat meat, we can't eat fruit or nuts either.

I do feel that vegetarians don't eat fish, but not everyone agrees.

I think the problem comes from the fact that people simplify vegetarian to mean "doesn't eat meat." That isn't true. If it were, then eating lard would be vegetarian. Eating chicken broth would be vegetarian. Heck, eating organs would be vegetarian. The fact is that a vegetarian doesn't eat slaughter products. Of course, people often tend to get upset if you say "I don't eat slaughter products" or "I don't eat stuff made out of dead animals," and it is kind of annoying to list all of the things you don't eat, so you often need to just play 20 questions.

That being said, language plays a large role. In culinary terms, "fish" is different from "meat." In fact, "poultry" and "game" are also different from "meat." This is because they are all treated differently in the kitchen. This makes sense and happens in other situations as well. Cakes and quick breads might appear in one chapter while another one has the "Dessert" section. Even though cakes are generally dessert, they are cooked in the same manner as quick breads.

Another way that language creates problems is when there is no direct translation for a term. Again, when someone believes that "meat" is only the flesh from a mammal, they won't understand that "vegetarian" means "no animals at all."

In terms of Catholicism, the church basically made up its own definition. There are a number of theories as to why, but ultimately, it's not important. You just need to know that they follow their own rules.

Meat.

Obviously.
I don't know why they don't consider it meat, but its as much a meat as a steak or cutlet.

EDIT - Greedy10

You're kidding right?

It IS a source of protein, but it came from an animal, so it is a meat.

.....

EDIT - @Kaper, thanks for the reply.
Semi-vegetarian diets consist largely of vegetarian foods, but may include fish or poultry, or other meats on an infrequent basis. Those with diets containing fish or poultry may define "meat" only as mammalian flesh and may identify with vegetarianism.[6][7][8] A pescetarian diet, for example, includes "fish but no meat".[9] The common use association between such diets and vegetarianism has led vegetarian groups such as the Vegetarian Society to state diets containing these ingredients are not vegetarian, due to fish and birds being animals.[10]

Just some more information, it may have convinced you
If not, you can use the Oxford Dictionary as I did and get this definition

vegetarian
Pronunciation:/v?d???t??r??n/
noun
a person who does not eat meat or fish, and sometimes other animal products, especially for moral, religious, or health reasons.

http://chineseop.com/vegan/Why-do-vegeta… For more information and opinions, the general consensus and factual base of the word Vegetarian defines fish to have meat.

Hope this cleared it up. :)
(re-read your statement, I'l leave this information here though for others, I realized just then that you semi-agreed with me but queried a particular part of the explanation)

My explanation for the 'nuts' having meat, is that they have the same name, but probably have a different meaning.

Meat - the flesh of animals (including fishes and birds and snails) used as food

Meat is animal flesh that is used as food.
Oxford Dictionary definition.

edible flesh of an animal, as in: Vegetarians do not eat meat.

All of these are definitions

You may also define them using
www.google.com
define: meat

Fish are animals, last time I checked. Their flesh is meat. When you buy fish, it's usually in the meat department (I think; I never bought fish, and it's been almost ten years since I bought meat).

Despite what Catholic and Jewish dietary laws say, fish is meat.

It is meat. It's an animal, it contains the fish's muscle, and it's high in protein.

Obviously a vegetable. Duh.

None of the above...and contrary to the previous answers, it's not "meat" either.

FISH IS A PROTEIN.

its not vegetables

Fruit! (wink, wink)

None of those, they're fish!

meat
