I have never heard of potassium being helpful for weight gain. It certainly won't hurt any as long as you account for potassium you get in your diet as well-the RDA is 3500mg so it's pretty difficult to get too much, but it's worth being careful because too much is very dangerous.
I'm glad you're consulting a doc. Are you eating calorically dense foods like nuts/nut butters, low fat dairy, lean meat/fish and eggs? Whole grains are really helpful too. Good luck to you.
When someone isn't gaining weight, it means that person is not eating enough food to gain weight. You might think, "But I eat plenty of food!" but with your metabolism, you're not eating enough food FOR YOU. Someone else who eats your amount of food may gain weight, but you're not someone else...you're you, with your fast metabolism.
Potassium is fine and you can take it and all that, but as far as I know it's not helpful for weight gain or to slow down your metabolism. Also ensure that you are getting magnesium, as potassium and magnesium work together.
To gain weight, just eat even more than you're eating now.
