I can eat bread, pasta, pizza but I cannot eat veggies. Why?!

Question: I can eat bread, pasta, pizza but I cannot eat veggies. Why?
I have a young, female friend in her early 30's that says "If I eat any food that is good for me such as fruit and veggies; I end up in the bathroom for the next 24 hours cramping, diarrhea, gas, bloating, and sometimes I even have passed minimal amount of blood."

What little concern the doctor has shown is amazing. Can't find anything really wrong. I checked on Celiac disease and wheat intolerance but I am not sure if this might fit for her.

Anyone out there have experience with these weird symptoms? I mean... how can one be okay when they eat the fatty crap that's not healthy and then have your stomach and intestines turn on you so bad whenever you do?

Thanks for any help I can throw her way!

It's a silly reference, being the Simpsons & all, but what a previous answerer said really is true for most people. If your body is used to being fueled by garbage, and you all of a sudden cut that out or down & eat *real* food then you're most likely going to have some kind of digestive reaction. Mostly because you're actually getting good wholesome fiber, and not the refined carbs your body is used to. Over time, this will make your bowel movements more healthy and regular, but if it's a sudden change it could cause most of the symptoms you/she mentioned (blood sounds bad though...might want to have that checked out). I'm vegan and eat very healthy most of the time, but even sometimes when I eat too much fruit at once I wind up with awful bloating, and certain foods like too much garlic at once give me awful gas (and bloating/cramps if I try to hold the gas in, like if I'm at work). And, you're right about celiac/gluten intolerance....if she eats a lot of refined bread, pasta, and pizza, there's no way that could be her issue, since they all contain gluten or wheat unless she's been buying gluten free stuff, but that doesn't sound like the case.

I'm actually not surprised about the lack of concern from the doctor. So many doctors are either complete idiots about nutrition or they just don't care and are more apt to prescribe some ridiculous drug instead of suggesting lifestyle changes because big pharma pretty much pays their salary. You might suggest that she see a holistic doctor or at least try to gradually introduce wholesome foods into her diet. Like maybe have one meal a day that is well balanced for a week and then go on to two the next week or two weeks later, and so on. Add in healthy snacks at some point until eventually, her body is adjusted to real, good, healthy food.

These are common symptoms for someone who has never eaten an adequate amount of fiber-any time they do the GI system can't handle it. The answer is to increase overall fiber increase gradually. The doctor is not concerned for this reason-a small amount of blood is indicative of hemorrhoids caused by chronic constipation caused by continuous low fiber diet fiber and/or dehydration.

I agree with the other poster, she is eating crap. She isn't wheat intolerant because flour/pasta/bread is wheat.
She sounds like a picky person who wants to be a vegetarian but doesn't like fruits and vegetables. Sort of an oxymoron.
She needs to slowly introduce them into her diet - if she really wants to. Not eat say a big bunch of fruit or veggies and not expect to be 'stoved up'.

My grandmother has the same problem. If she wants ANY food, it HAS to be cooked. Pizzas, pastas, ect are already cooked which is why it just seems like that.
Maybe if she boiled and cooked and steamed her veggies and fruits (yes, fruits, too for my grandmother, at least) she could digest and take them in MUCH better.

Have you ever seen the simpsons episode where marge makes them eat only health food and they get really sick?
It's cuz they aren't used to the healthy food, just used to junk. Just tell her to do a few days of GRADUALLY eating health food.

try drinking V-8 or other type of fruit and veggie drinks in liquid form.

raw

cooked vegetables are nototrious for giving off gas, and sulphur.

I love green beans, broccoli and brussel sprouts but if I eat them I will suffer two days.
I can eat them raw- FAR less gas and bloating. The raw veg has not been destroyed in its cellulose and the structure hasn't gone soft and soggy- which releases those gases. HEat also does this.

Raw veg still gives you fibre, but doesn't give you bloating- at least very little of it.

Some veg does for me- and I'd encourage her to eat things one at a time- a bowl of raw carrots, or a bowl of raw cauliflour to see how her body copes.
But do it slowly.

LEttuce, cabbage and onion- they are very bad for bloating. Look for soft veg-tomatoes, zucchini
spinach, mushrooms. These has gentler fibre than the others.

OR, blend everything up to a soup. GO slowly, don't overload your poor stomach with veg, it can only take a bit.
