Crisis of faith- considering going back to eating fish- HELP!?!
My reasons are
-easy protein
-low calorie (sometimes)
-it would make life easier
My reasons against are
-fish are living too
-The environment (inefficiency of energy transfer between trophic levels)
-The idea of eating a dead animal is, quite frankly, gross
I'm not sure!!!
Would I lose more weight if I returned to eating fish? Tbh that is my main concern...
If it matters, I have an eating disorder, I don't know if that might change your answer...
Answers:
I don't think your decision would make life easier for the fish you are choosing to potentially exploit! It is not at all healthy for you but more importantly it isn't healthy for the fish you are going to have to exploit to get their product. Tofu is easy protein, so are beans and nuts and other legumes and the many other things that don't come from animals that have protein in them.
Plus it is important to keep in mind that fish live in the water and we allow all sort of toxic runoff and chemicals into the water plus gas and oil spills, waste dumping, pollution, and so on and so forth. Do you really want that in your body. Because I know I wouldn't and I am quite sure if I was a fish I wouldn't want that stuff in my body either nor would I want my body in your body or anybody else's body.
You don't lose weight eating animals or their products. You lose weight by eating a proper diet with plenty of fruits and veggies and less fat and sugars. You could eat all the exploited animals you want but it won't help you or help those you are choosing to exploit.
vegan because animals are not property
Do whatever you feel comfortable with, it is your body and what you do and don't decide to eat is up to you.
I have been vegetarian for 16 years but went back to eating fish a couple of years ago when I got bored of how restrictive my diet was.
However, you are your own person and have different reasons for being vegetarian than I have so only you can tell what you will be comfortable with
All I can say is what might work for me. Eat fish today, then try not to eat it again for a week, or two, or three. A Vegetarian lifestyle is difficult to maintain. "Falling off the wagon," isn't necessarily bad. Every Vegetarian I know has fallen off more than once. You shouldn't feel guilt as if it were a religious choice. Rather, let your falls happen, and then move on. Just because you can't avoid a craving for fish today, that doesn't mean you should give up, and just eat fish every day.
If you wouldn't consider going back to lean beef or chicken, you shouldn't consider fish. Get treatment for your eating disorder, please. See if your doctor can refer you to a nutritionist. If you are really in need of protein, a smoothie (use powder or tofu) will be a heck of a lot faster and cheaper than fish.
Be well!
Well, my friend was a vegan, but she decided to just add fish into her diet. She hasn't gained a pound.
You only need 30 grams of protein a day, a single can of black beans could provide that very well.
fish is not only high i protien but also omega-3 which is a must. If you stick with backed, skinless fish is has VERY little fat.
technically plants are living things too so i think you'd be ok with fish

Jesus ate fish - you just gotta think on some level that if fish was good enough for Jesus, it'll be good enough for you.
That was a joke. Apparently, your sense of humor is shot, too.
Deal with the Eating Disorder before worrying about what your eating as it wont make much difference when you die of malnutrition what you did eat.
I was an eating disorder veggy who got sick... lucky i lost the disorder!
Yep, if you eat fish every day you will lose 30 pounds within a month! Because obviously calories don't mean anything, it's all about how much fish you eat! Hope this helps!
Go read The revenge of Gaia for the best answer. A lot of fish are farmed which in turn causes huge problems for wild fish stocks.. I'm not a vegan but environmentalist..
This is a tough one because wouldn't you agree it's a personal choice? You state that the idea of eating a dead animal is gross. That would be enough for me- but I don't feel that way about fish.
Fish have been consumed for thousands of years and they, unlike land animals, have a ton of valuable health benefits! No land animal can provide that!
Salmon is a highly nutritious food. Of course, it is high in protein, and the “good fats." But did you know that a 4 oz serving of wild salmon provides a full day’s requirement of vitamin D? It is one of the few foods that can make that claim. That same piece of fish contains over half of the necessary B12, niacin, and selenium, and is an excellent source of B6 and magnesium. Canned salmon also contains large amounts of calcium (because they grind up the bones). People who eat fish seem to be protected from a host of conditions. Some of this is probably due to the omega-3 fats, but there may be other benefits apart from this. The science isn’t clear yet as to all the reasons why eating fish (particularly fatty fish such as salmon) seems to be so darned good for us.
Omega-3 fats seem to primarily work through reducing inflammation in our bodies. Inflammation is turning out to be at the base of many health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, some types of cancers and arthritis. Omega-3’s also help prevent the blood clots which cause many strokes.
An exciting, fairly recent development is the realization that omega-3 fats have potential to help slow cognitive problems such as Alzheimer’s disease and age-related cognitive decline. Also, people who have sufficient levels of omega-3’s (especially as compared to omega-6 fats) seem to have less depression and suicide risk, as well as less aggression -- in one study, giving prison inmates this type of fat (plus vitamins) reduced aggressive behavior by a third in a mere two weeks.
Another difference (admittedly is still being argued) is if a fish's brain and responses are similar to humans. It is currently argued with some pretty good studies backing it that since fish brains are so different from human brains that fish are probably not conscious in the manner humans are, so that reactions that seem similar to human or land animals reactions to pain are really just an auto muscular and/or neuro response but that they lack the part of the brain that we have that can analyze situations and produce emotion such as fear.
I am basically a lacto vegetarian. I occasionally eat Salmon (and handful of times a year) and sometimes I will eat an egg (maybe a dozen in a whole year) . I never eat a land animal and the only reason I am a vegetarian is because my body cannot digest meat but does okay with fish or eggs on a very minimal basis and I need the "treat" now and then.
Easy protein... I bought those single serving glasses/blender things where you can make one smoothie and the glass is your blender... I put 1/2 frozen fruit, add 1/2 banana, add 1 cap full of Organic Life Liquid Vitamin, 1/2 cup of plain but high in probiotics yogurt,
*2 tablespoons of protein powder (gives about 9mg of protein per tablespoon),
and one packet of Emergen C powder (1500 mg of additional C). Blend and drink every morning and afternoon. This will give you 40mg extra protein.
This along with some soy nuts you can munch on, egg, yogurt has protein. This is why I am a "lacto" vegan because I get extra protein from the milk products.
Hope I helped give you enough info to help you out!
Hello,
No disrespect meant, but, humans are carnivores, we are the only species that can decide for ourselves what we do and dont eat, we are not designed to only eat one type of food, and you can break it down further to what's the raw ingredients of most foods, I am a chef by trade and I have never fully understood why anyone would want to deprive themselves from trying different tastes and foods, I can only guess you have never had a fillet steak cooked to perfection , or a lemon sole with a garlic and lemon sauce, again no disrespect , BUT you should try ALL foods before you can say you want to deprive yourself , So in short,, eat fish, meat, chicken, and veg,, as long as you have sensible portions you will not gain weight, and you might learn to enjoy and appreciate food
Firstly fair play for admitting you have an eating disorder, i've had close friends & family suffer from anorexia & bullemia. Of course i'm just a random YA poster, but i highly recommend if you haven't already telling a close friend or family member about it. The fact that you are aware its an eating disorder is already a big step towards taking control again of yourself (bullemia & anorexia isn't controlling what you eat, its the complete opposite being controlled by fear of foods).
Anyways onto the vegetarian points, i personally if i was ever going to go back to meat would consume land meat (ie chicken/pig etc).
Fishing is becoming a huge international concern both due to the overfishing/wrecking of habitats/by-catch/ocean pollution. Its easily the less sustainable source of meat & already huge bans and quotas are placed by the EU on both my countries seas (Ireland) & continental fishing.
Protein is easily gained through eggs, nuts, seeds & virtually everything you eat will add up. Unless you are a high performance athlete, you're getting enough protein & even at that the human body can only gain 9kg of protein a year which means upping protein intake by about 8 grams a day would maximise this.
Would you lose weight eating fish? no, weight is lost through a combination of a healthy diet, excercise & other biological factors such as metabolism which can be slightly sped up by diet. Cutting food sources such as carbs is also extremely unhealthy (main reason being its humans main food source for energy & carb-food sources provide a wide variety of nutrients). Besides meat, fish included is still higher in fats & energy than any vegetable source in the same weight distribution.
I advise listening to the song ''everybodys free (to wear sunscreen)''-Baz Lumhran, there will be some wise words in the spoken lyrics
vegetarian
I've been vegetarian for the same amount of time as you, and I started eating fish again, but I don't eat any other meat...The benefits that you listed above are very true...My health professor was teaching us in class the other day that since protein is what helps build muscle, if you eat a diet high in protein, it's much easier to lose weight...Of course you still have to work out and stuff like that, but still...it helps.
It was a kind-of a difficult decision for me to make too...I didn't want to seem like a hypocrite to all my friends, who know I'm vegetarian...But, in the end, I just decided to do whatever I wanted to do...I chose to be vegetarian for health reasons, so it wasn't as hard as it would be for someone like you who did it for the enviornment...Just do whatever you think is right!
I really don't see why people are veggie, however that's your choice.
If you decide to eat fish you might as well eat any meat - why choose between fish fowl or meat?
Also fish are not (usually) bred to eat they are taken from the sea; while animals are reared to eat and if we did not eat them they would never had a life - whats better a short happy life or no life at all.
We also could not feed the earth with out meat.
Fish is good for you, Jesus was a fisherman. Do it girl!
