Vegan products you can buy in Woolworths/Coles?!

Question: Vegan products you can buy in Woolworths/Coles?
I am doing the Vegan Challenge in March and I'm wondering if people could help me out with products you can buy in Coles or Woolworths. Also, if there are any recipes you'd like to share as I go to TAFE full time so I need to pack things in my lunch box :) thank you!

Well, apart from the obvious things - like fresh fruit and vegetables, canned fruit and vegetables, frozen vegetables, nuts and seeds, dried beans and lentils, canned beans and lentils, dried fruit, fruit juice, cereals, soy milk, rice milk, almond milk, oat milk, some brands of bread (Helga's & Abbott's Village are a couple of brands of sliced bread, plus there are flatbreads - good for wraps), etc. - there is the Sanitarium range of products, which you'll find in various aisles - peanut butter and Marmite in amongst the spreads; natural peanut butter and canned nutmeat, nutolene and casserole mince on the healthfood shelves; soy sausages and other products in the chilled section; a few cereals in the cereals aisle; some ready-made meals in the freezer section (EDIT: I don't buy those, so they might be the ones GC mentioned that are not vegan). Apart from Sanitarium products, there are various things like tofu and tempeh in the chilled section. I could go on, but you get the general idea ... and I don't have all night. (EDIT: And GC beat me to it!) Take a look around the next time you go to the supermarket. There are a lot more vegan-friendly foods there than you realise.

Congratulations and good luck! I'm a relatively new vegan. I started a "30-day challenge" on Jan 3, and once the days were up, I kept going! The kindest thing a fellow vegan emailed me was that many life-long vegans start on a "challenge" or "trial". What inspired you to make the switch? I wish you all the best on this endeavor.

As far as lunches go, I've always been a big fan of homemade soup. Soup is easy to make, is inexpensive, and the type of food that pays to make from scratch because the difference between fresh vs. canned is astronomical. Here's a link to (3) of my favorite soup recipes: http://prosciuttoandparmesan.wordpress.com/tag/soup/

Enjoy and good luck!

Good for you.

Coles/Woolies have a very similar range and most of the larger stores carry some vegan suitable items except some of the ones in regional centres might not have as much. There is usually a small section in the deli fridge with tofu and other things. Here are some recommendations:

King land soy yoghurt
blue lotus smoked tofu
curried tempeh rolls
sanitarium vegie dogs and sausages (not all of the santiarium products are vegan, check for egg white on the ingredients list)
eat well vegie burgers and sausages

In the frozen section- Sanitarium not burgers ( http://www.sanitarium.com.au/products/ve… ). McCain chips and hash browns are vegan (check for tallow among ingredients of other frozen potato brands, tallow is beef fat).
So good ice cream

If the supermarket has a health food section, there are quite a few items there.
Sweet william chocolate
Leda bars and chocolate rum balls
vegie chips
you might find some canned Sanitarium products here like nut meat, savoury lentils and vegie mince.
There is also a range of buscuits and stuff in this section which are marketed for people with allergies (gluten, egg etc). Some of these are vegan, freedom foods does one I think.

Pasta sauce- most of them have cheese, check the labels. Leggos Napolitana and Calabrese are vegan. Some of the new Coles brands are vegan (at least the Napolitana is). Most dried pasta is ok, check for egg on the ingredients list.

Confectionary- most brands of plain chips are ok but the flavoured ones contain milk. Woolies brand salt and vinegar are ok. Those new grain waves has a plain flavour with is vegan. You can often get soft licorice including red licorice, some of these are vegan but if they contain colour 120 then they are not vegan... 120 is a red food colouring made from boiled bugs. This is also used in most of the other lollies they sell. You also have to watch out for gelatine if you are looking for this kind of snack. The normal oreo cookies are vegan but the chocolate ones aren't. Many savoury biscuits are ok (vita weet etc) check for eggs and milk.

Bread- whether its vegan or not depends on the individual store as they either make it themselves or they get it from a supplier and many of these use milk. Some of the coles stores will have vegan hot cross buns for the next few weeks (yay). Although for the first time I have seen gelatine on the ingredients list at one store in melbourne. Mostly they will just have milk but are otherwise vegan.

Most canned fruits and veg are vegan, things like pickles and sauces are usually ok. Worcerstershire sauce contains fish, but there is a vegan version on the shelves at the moment if you can't live without it.

All the juices and soft drinks are ok. Almost all soy milks are vegan except for the "calci plus" varieties of vitasoy which contain vitamin D sourced from wool. If you are into milk I'd recommend you try Vitasoy "soy milky" ( http://www.vitasoy.com.au/products/milky… ) it is the closest consistency and flavour to cows milk, other types can be more watery.

Anyway, that should get you started. If you live in a city you'll find more at one store than another, it depends on their neighbourhood demographics. Try a few different stores over the month if you are able to see if you get to sample a wider range. And good luck!
