my mom made chili with meat, but im trying to go pescatarian/vegetarian?!

Question: My mom made chili with meat, but im trying to go pescatarian/vegetarian?
A few days ago I decided that I REALLY don't want to eat meat after seeing a PETA video. I told my mom and she said that she would support me, but apparently I didnt make myself clear enough. She bought some beans, corn, etc to make chili which was fine with me, but then this morning its in this HUGE container of chili that has beef in it. I really cant/dont want to eat it. But at the same time I feel bad because she just went grocery shopping and the food that she bought has to last us all week because we dont have alot of money. I'm really upset/conflicted about this. What should I do? I was thinking I could pick the pieces of meat out but I still feel bad.

Answers:

Have a bowl of cereal.

It's up to you whether you eat it or not. But vegetarians have to learn how to cook for themselves or they are going to be very frustrated. You're 17 and I assume you're not going to be eating at home all the time shortly so you'll need to learn to only rely on yourself to feed yourself. Don't worry about the chili going to waste because it can be frozen for your mom to eat later. Good luck!

Just because you're changing your diet doesn't mean everybody else in the house has to. I suggest you learn to cook so you can support your diet change, and have another talk with your mother. Look up cheap vegetarian recipes and maybe you can cook for your family a couple times a week :) Good luck

I tried it too. Trust me, I went on for a week. Eat the chili and start the next day. It was hard for me because I didn't realize how much food I eat is actually meat.

you can't really pick the pieces out of a meat chili.

DOn't make her feel bad, just eat the other lovely things.
If she made it, she can have it tomorrow for lunch , whatever.

Vegetarian food is CHEAPER than meat. I'm guaranteeing that the beef in the chili wasn't cheap like chickpeas and lentils.

WHy be conflicted? Just say, you know it's cheaper anyway, but you really want to make a conscious change to be compassionate in your life, and the animal farming industry is VERY cruel and pollutive to the planet and it's just not necessary to eat that greasy meat anyway.
There are MORe sources or protein, fat, energy in plant foods AND they'r cheaper and overall is a positive thing to do for your life, body AND the environment, and that you want to be a person like that- some one who is aware of their world and you just can't eat this meat stuff now- it's a bad choice, and supports pollution , torture, dirty food, cruelty and it's not even healthy to eat.

I'd say that, and find some sites for vegetarian nutrition so she can see the sense, plus it really IS cheap to eat very very well vegetarian-wise.

LEgumes- chickpeas kindey beans, pinto beans, split peas, lentils, fava beans, are really easy to make into chili, soups, stews, casseroles.
Add veg, like carrots, potatos onions, peas, broccoli- that is going to be cheaper than anyhting with meat.

My take: you probably made yourself absolutely clear. When she agreed to support you, that meant that she would accept your decision and perhaps help you out if she could. You for some reason took this to mean that she was going to either stop eating meat herself or start making separate food for you.

At 17, you are old enough to make your own food and should begin to do so. It is not acceptable for you to expect Mom to do a bunch of extra work or to expect her to forego meat herself. You're practically an adult! You have two options: either eat the chili this week and start next week, or don't eat the chili. Either way, you need to make a change in the coming weeks. Remind mom that you want to skip red meat and poultry (or all meat, if you decide to go vegetarian), and ask if you can come grocery shopping with her, or do it for her. When you come home from the grocery store, cook your own darned food! If Mom wants to make a big pot of chili, see if she will show you how. Divide everything in half before you add the meat. You get the meatless, she gets the meaty. Making spaghetti? Again, set aside half of the sauce to have without meat.
