Benefits of becoming Vegetarian?!
Answers:
If you're eating a healthy, balanced diet now, you won't gain anything.
If your current diet consists of junk food and you switch to vegetarian junk food, you won't gain anything.
There's no real research that shows vegetarians live longer, healthier lives. By far, most of the research on vegetarians in the US has been done on members of the 7th Day Adventist Church. They hardly represent the "average" American.
There is, however, research that shows vegetarians tend to have lower iron stores than omnivores and lower B12 levels. Low B12 levels are tied to heart disease, stroke, and depression (to name a few). Iron in veggies is non-heme iron and harder for your body to absorb than the heme iron in meat.
Some vegetarians switch out meat for fake soy products. Soy in moderation is probably ok if you're a normal, healthy person, but don't make it the center of your diet: soy milk, soy cereal, fake soy meats, etc. I mean, they promote soy to menopausal women to help with their hot flashes!
Then there's protein. Vegetarians will tell you how easy it is to get protein, but it's not. Protein is made of up of amnio acids. While meat contains all the amino acids need for complete protein, veggies only contain some (or weak versions). You need to eat a wide variety of veggies EVERY DAY and your body can combine the amino acids from each to make complete protein (hopefully). One amnio acid, lysine, is mostly found in beans (legumes). You need at least one serving a day of those to get the protein your body needs to grow and build muscle.
Good luck....
