Have you eaten something that wasn't vegetarian because you didn't want to waste food?!

Question: Have you eaten something that wasn't vegetarian because you didn't want to waste food?
I feel so guilty right now I was on a trip at a church, and someone said there was cheese in the eggs so I asked anyone did they want my eggs, and no one said anything so i took a bite i hate wasting food there are starving kids who would want those eggs. So after I took a bite another girl gave her eggs away because she didn't want hers and the other girl wanted her eggs.I didn't give mine away because I took a bite out of mine and I didn't want to give her germs there is a stomach virus going around lately. Also I know the people who prepared the food would probably be mad if I was seen wasting food and I didn't want to look ungrateful for people who spent a lot of time making food for us. Can I still consider myself a vegetarian I feel really bad about this! Also I am not a vegan. The cheese was from velveeta.

Answers:

It can be awkward if you have helped yourself to something unknowingly and then before eating it discover it does not reflect your values, especially if you are in a situation where the people who provided the food will notice it not eaten. However, it is considered poor manners to comment on the contents of other people's plates, so no one should be saying anything to you.

I think I would try to discreetly get rid of it (cover it with a paper napkin and throw it out?), and if not possible, leave it. If anyone said anything I would sincerely apologize with a *very* brief explanation, and move on. Example, "I'm so sorry I took them without realizing. They looked delicious, and I hate to waste them, but I can't eat them since I'm vegetarian." This will probably lead to surprise and you could briefly explain that rennet is from calves. Hopefully they will be understanding.

If you were just served the eggs without anyone asking you, you would have nothing to apologize for. And your eating or not eating the eggs is not going to affect starving people. Also it's not like you make a habit of this - it doesn't make you a wasteful person.

I don't at all blame you for your choice to eat it in the heat of the moment. You are still vegetarian because you intend to do better in the future, right? Forgive yourself and move on. Mistakes happen, and even an action you took deliberately but now regret can be called a mistake. However, if you intend to eat non-vegetarian cheese anytime an awkward situation comes up, then no, you would not be vegetarian.

jeezus.

YOu didn't eat meat.

No , you're not a vegan, but you never said you were, so what is the big deal?
Secondly, face it- you wanted to eat the eggs, and so what?
You ate them. Don't blame a stomach virus, it's obvious YOU WANTED TO EAT THEM.

But so what?

eggs and cheese are fine to eat if you are vegetarian.

No worries -- if it's not meat, you can eat it and feel ethical. :) If you have some uncertainties, you might want to do some research into the differences between vegetarians and vegans. Wikipedia isn't a bad place to start.

No. I stand by my ethical principles.
You eating the products of animal suffering isn't going to help human suffering one bit.

Don't worry about upsetting Christians . They are always getting upset about every little thing . don't let them control u !

Yes your still a vegetarian.
