I was thinking about starting to become a vegetarian. But I don't know how to start and what to eat to have enough calories/protein etc for what I need each day.

As a vegetarian - Most things that we eat are not meats though we were raise on meat being the main course.

Things to experiment with would be rice, beans, nuts, different brands of soy milk - some taste like watered chalk - Some are great - tofu - different ones, I prefer extra firm - Nutritional yeast, has B vitamins (Red Star taste the best to me), Veggies and fruit.

You might want to eat cheese and even eggs if want - It's your own diet. If you don't want to eat something try replacing it with something other.

I became a veg in 1967 and at the time didn't think that a person could live without eating meat. Tried it for a week and have never gone back. It is cheaper and healthier - don't let them BS you about that!

If you have any doubts about what to eat go to the health food store in your area and ask them - tho all health food store clerks are not vegetarian, funny as that seems.

There are other items but you will slowly find them yourself.

Do not give up your friends who are meat eaters and be nice to them when they want you to go out to eat - If they want to eat meat - It's their body, so enjoy your salad or what ever and enjoy their company - even if they do think that your a little weird - It is just another name for wiser...

If you find that you don't feel comfortable with it after a while - you are in charge of you - It may or may not be your thing. There are no rules in this camp ;>)

Just remember that there are more lambs in the world today than there are lions.

it's admirable that you are starting you think about, esp. at your age. if it is easier for you, try substituting fake meat for real meat, and slowly cutting back on your meat intake. the big worry is making sure you get enough protein, which i believe you get from tofu, nuts, certain fake meat products, etc. just do some online research. cutting out meat and eating more fruits and vegetables in general is a good place to start.

also, hopefully you have a general doctor who is familar with a vegetarian diet and willing to work within those restraints.

some people might tell you being vegetarian means you will be deficient in certain proteins/vitamins- it just means you have to be more vigilant about what you are eating. which is really, a good thing.

good luck!
