botanically its a fruit, as it contains the seeds

according to the US tax codes and FDA, its considered a vegetable. This was done purely for money, as taxing imported vegetables is more costly and profitable than fruit

Truth and the FDA website

Tomatoes are savory, unlike most fruits, so they are cooked and eaten as vegetables.

Did you know that botanically speaking, watermelon is a vegetable? It's very close to squash and pumpkin. But because of the sweetness, they're eaten as fruit.

Both are absolutely delicious in the summertime.

Long Beach Rocker is correct...it was listed as a vegetable for tax purposes. Most people don't care about the truth as much as they care about "common use."

While we're on the subject, quinoa is also a fruit, so any time you see something listed as "whole grain" because it contains quinoa, it's a lie.

I recall reading an article on the web few years back that it was a tax reason

Reclassified Tomato so that its cheaper to import

I haven't met anyone to verify this in real life, and haven't looked into it further, so will be back to view answer's

I think mainly because of they way they are used in cooking. Yes, anything with seeds is a fruit, but we tend to eat fruits fresh or make desserts out of them because they are sweet. We lump some fruits into the veggie category because they aren't sugary sweet and we cook with them

Because tomatoes are used typically with other vegetables or savory dishes...not with fruits and dessert . You put a tomato in a vegetable salad...not a fruit salad. It does not contain the high levels of natural sugars that most fruits contain.

Because it can be made just like any other vegetable. You cannot imagine a sauce made of fruit for Italian pasta, but of tomato - certainly!

probably because it doesnt taste as sweet and sugary as other fruits.

Because we use it more savory dishes due to it's umami taste

it's used like a veg because it isn't very sweet.
