Potatoes are a relatively low calorie and nutritious food. Turning them into french fries triples the caloric value. You will likely feel about as satiated consuming an equal amount of potato with some butter and salt, yet will be consuming far less calories and sodium.

In addition, the vegetable oils used to deep fry are a potential health concern. They are highly processed, and often chemically altered by the process of hydrogenation. Chemical solvents, such as Hexane, Pentane, and Benzene, are often used to extract the oils from the seed, and are a carcinogen concern. The USDA does not feel the residual amounts of Hexane contained in vegetable oils is enough to cause adverse health effects, but there are limited studies to support this claim, and it is otherwise certainly debatable.

Another potential concern is with regards to the content of Omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid contained in vegetable oils. Many scientists believe that our consumption of Omega-6 PUFAs are much too high, and our Omega-3s are much too low. This discrepancy has been implicated especially in cardiovascular disease, but also breast cancer and prostate cancer.

If you make fries properly, like if you drain them over a rack, rather than on a towel or anything that has them sit in fat, an entire batch can have only 1 tbsp of oil actually in it, so they're not completely horrible for you, as long as you make them yourself. Leave the peels on b/c they'll be healthier

A lot of commercial fries are bad for you because they use hydrogenated (TRANS) fat, which clog up your arteries more. There are also insane amounts of salt & preservatives in them

Potatoes aren't that good for you, unless you bake them and eat them plain. Most potato dishes require copious amounts of oil or fat and salt and the rest require cheese or other dairy products.

French fries, if properly prepared, are actually better for you than many of the potato dishes doused in salt, butter, and sour cream.

Make smart choices and you can enjoy French fries as part of a balanced diet

Well, potatoes are not the best choice in veggies. They don't have a lot of nutrition. The skin contains most of the good stuff. And they are a simple carb that affects your blood glucose levels quickly.

French fries are fried, so you get the added fats and oils, plus the sodium. But, IMO, if you eat fries with the skin on them, fried in good oils, they're no "worse" for you than a baked potato with butter, cheese, etc.

Salt and fat since they are deep fried and salted. Also, potatoes actually are pure carbs... so in that sense, they aren't super good for you.

French fries have been deep fried doubling the amount of calories and cholesterall.

They contain fat that raises your cholestrial level and salt that raises blood pressure.

Seriously? F.R.I.E.D.

The salt, how they are fried and the additives all make fries bad.

They're fried, have a baked potato instead.

Hmmm could it be the fact that they are DEEP fried and Heavily salted?
