Why can't I call myself a vegan?!

Question: Why can't I call myself a vegan?
just because I eat chicken and fish? I don't eat red meat except VERY rarely but when I tell people I am a vegan in some other forums and they find out what I eat they get very judgemental. I eat a lot of bananas too.

Answers:

People shouldn't be so judgmental. You call yourself whatever you want.

There's a big difference between vegetarian and vegan, and eating meat means you are neither of the 2 (though you could say you were a semi-vegetarian if you ate poultry and fish rarely). Vegetarians generally do not eat meat, fish, or poultry. Vegans do not eat animal products or bi-products (no milk, eggs, honey, etc). I knew a vegan who was so strict, she wouldn't eat white sugar because she read it was made white by using animal bones.

You are most certainly NOT a vegan. If you want to be, stop eating fish, poultry, and all other kinds of meat, plus cut out eggs, dairy, and honey. If you don't want to do that, just don't call yourself a vegan... otherwise, people will continue to ridicule you.

Vegans don't buy or consume meat or foods containing them.
They don't buy or consume dairy, eggs, honey, or foods containing them.
They don't buy or wear fur, wool, leather, or clothing trimmed in them.
They don't buy or use products from companies whose distributors conduct animal toxicity tests.
They don't frequent circuses, rodeos, aquariums, zoos, and other venues where animals are held in captivity or forced to perform for profit.

You're not even vegetarian.

Words have actual meanings. Vegan means that you don't consume any animal products at all. It isn't about being judgmental, it's about correctness. A person isn't straightedge if they consume tobacco or alcohol, or if they consume heroin, no matter how rarely. The same goes for virginity. A person can "self-identify" as a virgin as much as they want to, but if they've had sex, they're completely incorrect.

Why not self-identify as an environmentalist?

You can call yourself anything you want to, it's a free country. Getting others to accept it is something else. There are pretty clear definitions of the term 'vegan'. If you don't fit the definition (which you clearly don't), then you're going to have a problem getting people to accept what you're calling yourself. And you'll probably annoy a lot of people who take the choices involved in being 'vegan' seriously, which may well be your intention.

See the link below if you really need a refresher on what 'vegan' means.

"the more vegans there are the more seriously they will take us" ...
you saying that you are a vegan and then eating chicken and fish and red meat actually makes people take us less seriously.
you should not even say that you are a vegetarian. you eat chicken fish and red meat. people get the wrong idea of what a vegan is when people do that, they end up thinking that we eat things we dont and that people only do it for the 'title'...

because vegan diets mean NO meat at all.
Also they do not eat fish, which is sometimes considered a fruit by some people who are ignorant.

I am sorry you want to be vegan but can't be, at least you're trying. Next time, pretend to be a chef and tell us about how much pizza you make into soup. Im sure that post will be equally as boring.

ha ha. i love you people. i worked with a girl who told everyone she was vegan even though she ate dairy, eggs, and turkey. when she found out i AM vegan (no animal products whatsoever at anytime), she changed her story to vegetarian. now she eats every animal and weighs like 300 pounds.

You can call yourself what you want, but you aren't a vegan, so if people are telling you that you aren't, they are only telling the truth.
I could call myself a red and white striped bouncy ball, but it doesn't make me one.

You eat a lot of bananas, so that makes up for eating meat? NOT!
You are not even vegetarian. If you eat meat even once a year you are still an omnivore. No meat, no fish, no dairy, no eggs, no honey...EVER!

yeah why not call yourself a doctor too? We need more doctors. Doesn't matter that you aren't, I mean you can still tell people to cut down smoking and eating fatty foods. What's the difference?

vegan biologist

Because vegans don't eat chicken or fish. They don't eat anything from animals.
Obviously people get judgmental. You're lying straight to their face.

You are not a vegan your not even a vegetarian, you are eating the flesh of an animal that was once alive. You are a carnivore!

just because I eat chicken and fish? well there you go... asked and answered. You are vegetarian if you eat any sort of meat.

lol ummm BECAUSE YOU STILL EAT MEAT and DRINK MILK ect all you have done is lowerd your meat consoption !

I see through your game, but otherwise it was a very good troll. I give you an 8/10.

cause that's not the definition of the word. I watch house and study biology but that doesn't make me a doctor.
