Is PETA bad for animals?!

Question: Is PETA bad for animals?
I'm completely for animal rights and I was going to support PETA but recently I've heard some bad stuff about them that they don't really care about animals or that they've been responsible for killing lots of animals themselves. I don't know what to believe, I want to support animal rights. if Peta is no good can anyone recommend a good one? I get the WSPCA and IWAF newsletters but I don't know too much about them so don't know if they are even good or just bad like PETA apparently is.
PETA has loads of celebrity support but some of the things I have heard make me not want to support it in any way, is the bad stuff true though or just made up by people against PETA?

Do you support PETA?

And no on reply saying "I'm for PETA if it's "People Eating Tasty Animals", it's so old now. Thanks.

Peta sucks. They are the animal rights equivalent of greenpeace- a multinational corporation whose main business is making money.

There are hundreds of activist organisations you can be supporting who don't have the huge payrolls of Peta. Start with Farm Sanctuary, Mercy for Animals, Compassion Over Killing. But remember the smaller the organisation is the less likely they are to be wasting money on themselves when they need it to help animals. The most effective AR group I've been involved with had myself and 7 other members, we'd do rescues from factory farms and use a network to rehome them. The big groups I've been involved with were spending money from donations on office space and all sorts of rubbish, whereas the small group just helped animals.

I think they have done a lot of good, but I don't always agree with their bullying tactics and sometimes I think they make animal rights people look bad to the general public. Their shelters are kill-shelters and I understand that, but it doesn't seem like they kill as a last resort. They are even antagonistic towards shelters that are no-kill. This isn't always fair, because some shelters can manage it.

support the CAUSE---NOT the corporation!!! you cant control what an organization will do, you can only control what YOU believe in and YOUR actions.

i will say that the peta2 message boards are great for getting a vegan support group, since most of us dont have supportive friends/family or other vegans to talk to.

PETA is not an "animals welfare" group. They are a money making corporate extortionist group merely using the legitimate issue of animal welfare to achieve their only true goal: make money to perpetuate themselves and feed the ever expanding ego of their president Ingrid Newkirk.

I've heard everything that you've heard i'm not really sure either.

PETA kills a lot of animals. If you think that's "bad", then, yes, PETA is bad for animals. They take in millions of $$$ every year, but actually spend very little of it on animals. They spend most of it on publicity and mail outs to get more money. Ingrid Newkirk made her living for years killing animals. According to a group of no-kill shelters, she hasn't changed her attitude much:

Then there's this little incident:

"DON'T BE FOOLED by the slick propaganda of PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. The organization may claim to champion the welfare of animals, as the many photos of cute puppies and kittens on its Web site suggest. But last week, two PETA employees were charged with 31 felony counts of animal cruelty each, after authorities found them dumping the dead bodies of 18 animals they had just picked up from a North Carolina animal shelter into a Dumpster. According to the Associated Press, 13 more dead animals were found in a van registered to PETA."

My suggestion is to give your time and money to local animal shelters. You can usually visit them and see how they're taking care of animals. Many of them encourage volunteers to come work with the animals to make them more friendly and, thus, more likely to be adopted.

All I know is that they support Breed Specific Legislation, their president saying to the effect that there are dogs in shelters who are much more innocent than any dog who so much as looks like a pit-bull or any other breed that may be banned.

Also, most of those celebrities supporting them still eat meat, still wear leather, still use animal products in their lines. Most of those celebrities have no clue what they're supporting, they're just a name to add to the list.

As far as the bad stuff, I'll give you this. Look up how many animal shelters Peta has. Heck, look on Peta's site itself and see if there's anywhere that says you can help Peta by volunteering at a local Peta animal shelter.

As far as that thing about them bringing in the thousands of domestic pets and only a few getting out alive, that was an actual VA document. You used to (may still be able to) find it on the VA commonwealth website.

I do not support Peta, nor the HSUS. In fact, the only places I support are individual shelters where I know what my money is funding and I like it. I know it isn't going to purely advertising, or the euthaniasia of thousands of pets who could easily find a new home.

PETA themselves admit that they take dogs from shelters that are facing euthanasia and put them down "humanely". They put up HUGE numbers doing this. So yes, they are responsible for killing lots of animals.
Two PETA employees were charged with animal cruelty and a number of other offences including obtaining the dogs under false pretences. Most of the charges went away and I think the only ones that remained were the illegal disposal.
Employees of the shelter claimed they believed the dogs were being taken to find homes for them, NOT to be euthanized.
(pro -PETA supporters will say that the petakills site is put up by anti-PETA groups, blah blah, but this case was documented in the news)

For the record, I support humane euthanasia for animals that have little or no chance to find a home. Our shelters are just too full to keep them all alive, and life in a cage is not a life. Dogs and cats need more than food and water to survive. Shelters do not have the resources to keep them all and to give all they have proper exercise and attention that they NEED. Wasting away in a cage is cruel.
However, I do find it hard to swallow that an ANIMAL RIGHTS group feels the need to perform these euthanasias. I just think that someone who is FOR animals would work harder at finding homes, not killing.

Are you also aware that PETA is against pet ownership? While they support spay/neuter and adoption, their ultimate goal is to end the domestic partnership between humans and animals. That means no pet cats or dog or anything else (part of me wonders how much of a role that plays in "humane euthanasia" and spay/neuter campaigns).

But no, I do not support PETA. I dont support the tactics they use to get attention, from ridiculous things like urging companies to use breast milk for ice cream, to naked women, to sabotaging dog shows, kidnapping hunting dogs. Most of all, I do not support PETA because they support the ALF, a terrorist organization.

My favorite PETA campaign. This is funny on so many levels.

I support Animal Welfare, not animal rights

PETA is generally a good group, and definitely looks out for the well being of animals, in all cases.

My only minor problem is that they tend to be a bit extreme. I think if they had their way, meat would be illegal for consumption. Hey - I could be wrong.
