Boil a live lobster and you're a chef, boil a live kitten and suddenly it's a big deal?!

Question: Boil a live lobster and you're a chef, boil a live kitten and suddenly it's a big deal?
Why is this. This is why I don't support any animal rights. If you want to believe animals have feelings, and that they matter then ALL of them have to matter, not just the cute ones. You see those commercials singing "eyes of an angel" over dogs and cats, but no one cares if you kill cows in factory farms, or boil lobsters.

Answers:

i know!! i just cant understand how some people are like, yuuuum, lets go kill an innocent animal, but when it comes to a dog or cat theyre like, noooooooo!!! dont kill it!!!
im on the side that sais dont kill ANY animals. i love them so much! i especially hate things like puppy mills and other breeding farms, they are so cruel and awful :'(

I absolutely agree. This is why I'm vegan. I wouldn't eat a kitten so why would I eat a lamb? Dog/pig dolphin/cow et cetera. It gets on my nerves when people get on their damn high horses like "Oh how can those horrible Chinese eat dogs? They're so CUTE and INTELLIGENT!" - Er, yeah, so are pigs but you still eat pork, moron. Either animals are for eating - ALL animals - or they're not. Don't act like you're so superior just because you only eat the particular animals the culture you were born into considers acceptable. But yeah, all ranting aside, I choose to be vegan as a way of supporting equal rights for all animals. If a cat or dog has the right to not be eaten then so should other animals. And if not, everything is fair game and if I want to boil a kitten that should be my prerogative. I don't agree with you (the asker) but I respect your opinion more than the hypocrites who selectively eat animals and then act like they're so morally respectable in comparison to dog-eaters or dolphin-eaters.

I completely agree and have made that very point on this forum many times. I really don't see why it's such a big deal to boil a live dog or cat and eat it.

But you also find this disparity among people who DO claim to support animal rights, even vegetarians and vegans who do not eat animals. Even the most hardcore militant vegan is more likely to be horrified if you mention that you ate a catburger for lunch than if you mention that you ate a hamburger for lunch.

And part of that discrepancy is cultural; in most of the Western world, we tend to think of cats and dogs as "pets" and we tend to think of cows and lobsters as "food". In other cultures, they may have different animals for those two categories. But the point is that they STILL have animals they think of as "pets" (a category for animals which they do not eat) and animals they think of as "food" (a category for animals which they do eat).

I am an omnivore who LOVES eating meat of all kinds, but I would no more describe myself as an "animal lover" than I would describe myself as a "people lover". I have pets who I love and care about, and I have friends/family who I love and care about; I see no inherent contradiction or hypocrisy in that.

Boiling lobster is cooking because the lobster will be eaten . Boiling a cat/kitten is not because it wont be eaten, just for "fun". but in cultures where cat is eaten (admittedly there aren't many), boiling them, alive or dead is not taboo. It is impractical to boil it alive though since the cat/kitten is likely to jump around.

The rest of your rant deserves no response because it is not really a question, more like expressing an opinion. Though you are certainly entitled to one, it does not mean it is correct.

People who choose to be vegan because of their feelings toward animal rights are idiots! The majority of life on this planet consumes meat. Instead of protesting eating meat altogether protest the way meat is processed today and promote better ways of processing. This issue with people being upset about how its ok to eat a cow and it's not ok to eat a dog is crazy. Your so obsessed with being upset wiht people who eat meat in general that you don't see the real reason why people don't eat dogs and cats. It's about taste. Do you eat grass or hay? What about bugs? You should be pissed off that people don't boil bugs alive to eat also.

"What I started to realize was that if I was primarily concerned about the welfare of animals, it might be better to support the farmers who were raising their animals in a humane way… pastured eggs and so on. That's when I started adding a few things like eggs and fish.

Welcome to planet Earth, home to the largest species of hypocritical and self gratifying people in the universe.

Also,I believe in animal rights, not just for the "cute" ones. I believe all animals, whether it be a lobster or a kitten, have the right to live a life free of abuse and exploitation at the hands of humans.

To answer your question: It is a big deal because we associate them as pets, as members of the family. Lobsters and Crabs are "inscets of the ocean" and people dissociate them with living, breathing family members.

Yes I do agree with you though. "Animal lovers" who eat meat are not animal lovers, they are more dog/cat/etc lovers. How can you say you love and cherish a life and then willingly go out of your way to support death?

Well, this IS why I support animal rights--because I don't get the cognitive dissonance that says eating cows, chickens, and pigs (and in the case of the mammals, wearing their skins) is okay, but killing and eating, say, a dog is not.

There are groups that oppose all animal exploitation. Compassion Over Killing (www.cok.net) has a shirt with a dog on a plate, with the tagline "Why Not? You Eat Other Animals."

Hello,

I agree with almost every thing you say and am glad some one has said this BUT not supporting any animal rights groups is not helping any one make a strt some where ! too manny animals are killed abused and tested on !

what are you talking about
i never agreed with boiling ANY animal or living being alive, lobsters included

thepeopel who are ok with that are usually not the veggies but the ones who eat them

Actually, boil a live lobster and it's a big deal. What kind of thug BOILS a live creature while it's moving around still?
Speechless.

This sounds like you do support animal rights. Maybe I'm missing the joke?

Kitties don't taste too good.

Whoa...Very true.

Whats the difference? Animals die for EVERY-ONES diet, even a vegans. A death for a diet is a death for a diet.

I think you over-simplify. If we carnivores thought this way, we would be mindless. Like we're not allowed to have an opinion. I think you and i are not like that.

well supposedly fish do not feel pain. why don't you do a little more research before asking that type of question.

Your avatar creeps the s*** outta me.
