If we were all born vegans, wouldn't we all be dead (read description below)?!

Question: If we were all born vegans, wouldn't we all be dead (read description below)?
Okay, so vegans aren't supposed to have any dairy products, right? So that would mean that if people were born vegans, they couldn't have breast milk when they were a newborn/infant (milk, even breast milk is technically a dairy product). Many babies need breast milk to help them survive when they are infants, so wouldn't we all be dead without it?

Also, even if there is some sort of a substitute for it, the fact that we have evolved into it being readily available in a newborn's mother proof that it should be okay to drink it? If so, then shouldn't it be natural to have dairy products in general?

Answers:

People cannot naturally be vegans. Put people out in the wild with no modern technology and they would have to eat meat or die. The only way they can be vegans is because of money and fully stocked grocery stores. Produce harvested on the other side of the world can be in your local stores in just a few days. And this just proves the point that the only way vegans can live their lifestyle is because of grocery stores, money, and world wide shipping. Before these conveniences, people could never be vegan. It also proves eating a vegan diet is not Natural.

Vegans aren't "supposed to" do anything. There is no vegan Gestapo.
They CHOOSE an alternative lifestyle for a plethora of varying reasons.

Ethical veganism involves opposition to the ownership of sentient creatures as property.
No part of that philosophy is relevant to breast feeding.

Even if it was, there are a variety of soy formulas available.

No, it is not NATURAL for organisms to consume milk after infancy, let alone massive quantities of another SPECIES's milk.

Breastfeeding takes place AFTER birth, so even were your presumptions true, it would be irrelevant to whether we are "born vegan".

Fail. Fail. Fail. Fail. Fail.

Ignore Daisy. She has an agenda. As evidenced by her conveniently forgetting a list of all the thriving healthy vegan children, not to mention one of the malnutritioned omnivorous ones.

no dear. a baby eating mothers' milk is not a vegan issue.

Dairy is cow, sheep goats milk. Eggs from chickens are considered dairy too.

Other animals' products- vegan diets do not consume these.

Human milk is fine for human babies.
The only milk that comes from mammals teats is OK for the baby of that animal species to drink, for the reason of growing milk teeth- the only reason milk is produced by any animal.

PS just eat vegetables with soil on them- it has b12 in it.

God help you. Human milk isn't a dairy product considering it doesn't come from an non human animal. Vegans don't drink milk cause it's cruel to steal milk from the cow but taking milk you produce for your own baby is not cruel. Veganism is staying away from animal products but human milk is not an animal product. I know you think you sound smart saying this but right now I really just want to cry as I read another ignorant queshtion.

LOL
Goats make milk, milk just for their babies.
Cows make milk, milk just for their babies.
Women make milk, milk just for their babies.

What if cows and goats invaded our privacy and our homes to drink women's milk? That's not right. But we're invading cow farms and torturing the poor creatures to get their milk that isn't even made for us. It's made for their babies, not for humans.

ALL mammals are designed to drink milk from their MOTHER. Not other creatures.

No. Moms make milk for their babies. Vegans have no problems with breast-feeding their children, and in fact generally agree that it is best. (Big fat no-brainer there.) Vegans believe that cows, sheep, buffalo, goats, etc, make milk for their own babies, much as human mothers do. They believe that the milk should to to feed the baby cow/sheep/whatever, and not us. It's not complicated.

most animals only drink milk for a couple of years and then stop so yea it is the best thing for newborns and babies as such.

a lot of vegans agree that babies should drink breast milk and become vegans later if that's the plan

You do know that all babies are born vegan, right? The only thing a baby is meant to consume is their mother's breast milk. And that goes for all mammals, humans included. There is nothing unnatural about a baby drinking breast milk.

vegan :D

It's only drinking milk from other animals that is not vegan. Breastfeeding babies is natural and perfectly vegan.

Mammals drink milk from their mothers as part of the natural cycle. Humans take milk from other species to consume after weaned off of their mother's milk.

breast milk isn't animal abuse so its ok

I've heard that breast milk was actually GOOD for vegan and vegetarian babies. Oh, and no. They don't. A lot of mothers don't breast feed. Lol.

Mother's milk is far different from consuming dairy products. Mother's milk contains what babies need to grow...including things like healthy bacteria for digestion. Mother's milk is a complete food.

...but we are weaned off of it for a reason. Our bodies no longer need mother's milk and instead need a variety of different foods for nourishment. This means that consuming dairy products is not only unnatural (it's not milk from a human, which is what human babies need, but milk from a cow, camel, buffalo, goat, etc.) but unnecessary (we were weaned from milk for a reason).

I see what you mean about the whole mother's milk is technically dairy since it's milk thing, but the fact is that it's milk intended for human babies to aid in their healthful development during early life. Milk from other animals and milk after we're weaned has no purpose whatsoever in our diet.

Unlike what Friendofchip said, eggs are not dairy. Dairy is milk from any species.
And I'm not sure how Deer Hunter thinks that our puny bodies will be able to "eat meat or die" if he or she "[p]ut people out in the wild with no modern technology." It's because of human technology (yes, spears and traps are technology) that we can even catch meat...let alone eat it. It's a heck of a lot easier to pull vegetables out of the ground or fruit off a tree than it is to snag a fish out of the water with my bare hands or run after, tackle and kill a deer with my "mighty omnivore" jaws :)

Did you make this up all by yourself or did Mommy help you?

As i read your question, my three-month-old son was actually nursing from me. Formula, is an adequate (at best) substitute for breast milk. My milk is not a dairy product, as it does not come from a farm or a business that takes a mammal's milk from her offspring to sell for profit. All babies need mother's milk to survive.

How did babies survive before formula? Wet nurses. (As it is, if I or my baby were too sick to breastfeed, or we adopted a newborn, I would look into milk banks before formula, or try and do a mix of both.

Humans are the only species that consumes the milk of another animal

By the way, I had a pumped bottle of my milk once-- the milk my body made for my son. However, he did not have it before it was to go bad, so I poured it on a bowl of cereal with some organic soy milk.

God gave me breasts to make milk to feed my babies.

We're not born vegan. We need vitamin B12 and it's not found in any plant food. Proof, IMO, that we are natural meat eaters.

Vegan mothers are often deficient in B12 and can endanger their baby's health.

A list of cases where babies' mothers were vegan and B12 deficient from VeganHealth:

http://www.veganhealth.org/b12/apinfants

But I think you're reaching to compare mother's milk to dairy products.

ADDED: The discussion here is about vegans. Not omnivores. Vegans who follow the very bad advice of people who proclaim the vegan diet is perfect, no supplementation needed (and that happens on this site just about every day) will wind up B12 deficient. If they happen to be nursing a baby, that baby will become B12 deficient. The list I linked to is on Dr. Jack Norris', a vegan Registered Dietitian, VeganHealth website. Don't like what it says? Encourage people to take B12 supplements.
