Vegans and animal-rights activists, do you wear Silk and Leather?!

Question: Vegans and animal-rights activists, do you wear Silk and Leather?
I am a vegetarian and hopefully someday a vegan. I do not purchase leather or silk unless it is a secondhand but I do have mixed feelings about wearing it since I don't agree with it.

If you disagree with me this question is not for you. the question is for animal-rights supporters.

Im wondering, is Silk really cruel? i have heard mixed things about this. thanks

I will not wear leather and I will not wear silk. In my opinion, silk is almost worse than leather, since they have to boil millions of silk worms alive to harvest the cocoons. There are a very few companies that harvest the cocoons after the silk moths emerge, and I might be willing to wear that, but any conventionally produced silk is a no. I also won't wear wool, cashmere, suede, etc. Pretty much anything made from animal skin, fur, or feathers will not be allowed to touch me.

I never wear leather. Not for the last 30 years anyway.
I still have a few silk and wool items which I had before I became a vegan last year. The general consensus among vegans seems to be that you have a couple of choices on what to do with items such as those (and leather, fur, feathers, felt, suede, sheepskin, etc.). Firstly, you can continue to wear them until they are worn out, then get rid of them. Secondly, you can dispose of them. Either give them away, donate them to charity, sell them on eBay, whatever - but don't just throw them away. The only problem with continuing to wear them (especially leather and fur) is that you may get accused of being a hypocrite by rabid anti-vegans.

Vegan!

Leather isn't bi-product, someone mentioned this and I disagree ENTIRELY.
A lot of leather is made in india, where cows ironically are sacred, (the labour is cheap) but because of this, the meat often goes completely to waste, which means the only thing the cow is being reared and killed for is it's hide. It's as bad as fur.

I know that wasn't what you were asking, but I do avoid silk because it involves killing something with nerve endings. I'm pretty sure there are cruelty free silks available, but they're very expensive and I wouldn't be able to tell you where to buy them from. As for conventionally produced silk, the silk worms are boiled to kill them, I certainly wouldn't want to die this way, so I avoid buying and wearing it.
Although, I agree with the person that said something along the lines of;
'If the animal died, you might as well give the death a purpose' kind of thing.
But personally I wouldn't feel comfortable with it against my skin, matter of choice really.

:)

As for vegans, leather is deffinately a no-go. In terms of silk, it varies between people, but when I was vegan my choice was to avoid silk. I agree with you, though, when you mention wearing second hard leather and silk; it does the animal more justice to put anything made from it to as best use as possible, if it must be killed at all.
Hope this helped, Rose x

Hi, I'm vegan, and I don't buy or wear leather. There are a lot of other materials out there so it's just not necessary.
Silk isn't something I've ever really been faced with. I'm not especially rich, and most moderately priced clothes aren't made out of silk! Faced with the decision though I would not chose to wear it. Insects are still animals, and we can never really know how much they're aware of.

Hello Dollface

Seriously I am starting to think that there is cruelty involved on many things on our planet, for our animal friends and also they way many human beings are treated. Just be as kind and compassionate as you can and follow your heart. Some things can make you become neurotic and paranoid, however setting a good example to others does help I find.

im neither of those, (im not an 'activist of any kind' tho i am very much animal rights supportive)
but as a veggie i hope one day they will make life and our soceity more animal, and veggie, friendly, i have to live in it right now as it is, i do what i can, but i cant do it all

the more you look at our soceity and the things we use, most of it has animal ingredients in it somwhere or in the making of it somwehere
it sucks, but its how we run our soceity

leather is crueler than silk.but silk is also cruel!
im glad u feel this way. i hope more people think the way you do..it will make the world a better place to live!

im a vegetarian.

Leather is a byproduct of the meat industry. So are the glues in your book bindings, the roads and sidewalks you travel, wall board in your room, paint on those walls, and a multitude of other items. So why should you give up leather (and silk), yet enjoy the other benefits of killing animals?

Is silk cruel? You mean taking threads away from mulberry worms is cruel? That's why I thinkg vegans/animal rights activitsts, etc. are off the wall looney.
