Actually, they're working on it right now.

I can't guess at what it will cost if/when it becomes commercially available. It could be expensive because of all the technology needed to create it, or it could be cheap because there would be no hard labor or agricultural resources to be paid for. I'd be willing to bet that at cheapest it would cost about the same as Spam and at the most expensive it would be a bit more costly than mock meats and other alternatives.
You can already get it right now. It is called Quorn, and (I am told) it actually tastes better than real meat!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quorn
It is about the same price as flesh meat, has no greasy texture and does not smell of burnt offal like regular meat does.
This product is a storm just waiting to arrive! When the first Quorn takeaways begin to appear and are a huge success, it will be the writing on the wall for the ghoulish meat industry. McDonalds will start offering Quorn burgers, abbatoirs will be replaced by Quorn factories. It is all about to start.
I can see a bright day coming soon when the idea of butchering animals for meat will be seen as being as ridiculous as going around with a wad of smouldering leaves protruding from one's mouth! Eating meat will go the way of snuff and corsets!
Here's to the future!
Cheers!
this is not going to happen because the definition of meat is The edible flesh of animals, especially that of mammals as opposed to that of fish or poultry
this is why you have bocca burgers, soy dogs, chickenless nuggets and the like. so really we already have what you call artificial meat.
In your dreams.
It will NEVER happen.
And I can tell you why --
To artificially grow tissue, you have to clone "grow" it from stem cells...
And the Religious Right will NEVER allow that to happen, for ANY reason.
They couldn't care less that stem cells might fix spinal cord injuries, Parkinsons, Diabetes, Organ Failure.... and the list goes on.... they are the ones who stopped all the research!
Think they care about people who don't want to kill an animal to eat it's flesh?
LOL.
Not a chance.
I wouldn't say never, but i'm sure they already can, but the price isn't right for commercial success. Remember, the military is at least 50 years more advanced than the general university scientists.
If they did, it wouldn't be vegetarian. Because, you know, it'd be meat. "Animal flesh" simply comes from animals, and that is all.
They've already grown some in a lab. Nothing can compare to the taste of a dead animal. You should go try it.
never, its cheaper and easier to kill and eat a real animal.

probably in a year
that would be cool
?NEVER? There is no reason to try.
