Bulimia vs. Vegetarianism?!

Question: Bulimia vs. Vegetarianism?
Wouldn't someone technically be considered a vegetarian if they purged all the meat they ate? Their body would not digest the meat, it would be in their stomach, but then right down the drain. They didn't really "eat" it then... Right? Kind of like how chewing and spitting something out wouldn't count as eating. Think about it...

PS This question is based on nutrition, NOT ethics.

Answers:

Completely arguing on nutrition and not ethics, the mouth is very absorbent. In fact, that's why dip and chewing tobacco produce a higher nicotine absorption rate than cigarettes, and why sublingual tablets (the kind that dissolve under your tongue) and things like headache powders create a practically instantaneous effect as opposed to swallowing a pill and waiting for it to digest.

Partial digestion and incomplete stomach emptying when you vomit will also cause you to still technically consume meat.

In other words, due to the nature of food digestion in the stomach and nutrient absorption via the mouth, you would still be gleaning some nutritional value (positive or negative) even if you threw it up.

Well, your body starts digesting meat once it hits your mouth and it starts to break down the meat's protein with enzymes in your saliva. In addition Bulimia or purging never actually gets rid of every calorie and meal consumed, in fact some people believe that most bulimics do not purge evan half of the food taken in, this is because your stomach starts to absorb the calories and nutrients as soon as the meat hits the stomach when it begins to be churned. So no matter how you argue it... you can't be a vegetarian if you swallow any meat- and on a more ethical grounds putting it in your mouth and chewing it doesn't effectively follow the principles of true vegetarianism.

Vegetarian and experienced purger...

Bulimia specifically is a physiological disease based upon self image, not diet. It should be treated by a medical professional. Aside from the physiological problems there is a list of physical problems not the least of which your stomach acid belongs in your stomach.

As for Vegetarianism it is a dietary choice. Most Vegetarians are so because of cultural or religious believes. It has nothing to do with Bulimia or any other psychological disease.

First of all, I think you mean vegetarian with bulemia. No vs.
Second, it's really a disgusting thought.
Third, if you were truly vegtarian, you wouldn't be dreaming of ways to eat, chew, swallow, ENJOY meat without actually eating it.
Fourth, if you DID feel the need to consume meat as a vegetarian, then just give it up!
And lastly, even when you chew gum, you are still consuming juices and calories associated with the gum. You're fooling yourself if you think that absolutely none of the meat will be left in your system, even after throwing up.
PS-do you think it would taste as good coming up as it did going down?

Your body begins digesting food the moment it is put in your mouth. Saliva breaks down polysaccharides and lipids in food, so at this point you have already "eaten" the meat. Even if you spit it out, you have already absorbed a few calories (which is why chewing gum lists nutrition data, btw.) If you actually swallow it, you body digests the food even further. Even if you purge immediately, you have still consumed most of the calories available from the food.

Bulimia is an eating disorder, and a very dangerous condition.

Vegetarianism is a choice of diet that does not include meat.

They are not in anyway comparable. A Vegetarian doesn't EAT meat. It's not about whether or not you digest it, but whether or not you eat the stuff.

As for chewing a spitting, I'd still call that eating. It's pointless that way, but it's still consuming the meat.

No, don't compare the two. They consumed the meat. Ethically, it isn't because they contributed to the meat industry. Technically, it isn't either. They still ingested it, even if they threw it up. To me, they still ate the meat and tasted it in their mouth.

Hello

They themselves would classify themselves as a vegetarian and keep their secret of stuffing and throwing up meat to themselves, because of shame. As for other people, they would probably say that the person is not a vegetarian.

A vegetarian doesn't eat meat at all. A vegetarian doesn't throw up anything that they eat. If someone eats any kind of food and throws it back up on purpose, doesn't matter what kind of food it is, they are bulimic.

They wouldn't be a vegetarian. They ate meat, the fact that they didn't technically digest it is irrelevant. Although, even if they purged their stomach contents, some of it is still digested.

Eating and purging are 2 different things.

If you are chewing and swallowing it you are eating it-- no matter what it is. even if you purge it later... if you did not eat it, it wouldn't be there to purge.

well not really. cus you have still eaten ti, and it has still been in your stomach. so you would still eat meat.
so really i dont think purging meat would make ou a vegetarian, cus you'll still eaten it!!

:)

Nope, quite a bit of meat would be actually be digested before throwing it up, so I would have to say you'd still end up consuming meat in the end. Plus, what a gross question.

It is all about ethics. The ethics of damaging one's body with bulimia, and the ethics of saving animals by not eating them.

And it is about throwing food away when 2 billion people out there are hungry! Ethics? Darn right!

digestion begins in the mouth, therefore they're still eating meat.

i only purged when i ate meat/stopped eating meat/stopped purging.

If I did that I would consider myself a phony vegetarian

The meat that you are getting rid of is still being killed. Just go vegetarian, and have some sustainable fish if you need it

They are still buying the meat in the first place. All the person would be doing is simply wasting their money.
No, they're not a vegetarian.

Nah. They still ate it...even if they didn't keep it down.

ew.
