fruitarian? anyone got answers?!

Question: Fruitarian? anyone got answers?
discovered a site for people who only have fruit, this site suggested taking a few lettuce leaves from the plant was somewhat dodgy? Actually taking anything from the ground was questionable? To me taking an apple or a pear, orange, strawberry, etc is the same deal. Completely harmless, they all self sow, or keep seed and re-sow, this is really beond me, any thoughts

Answers:

They're extremist, akin to a cult. Fruits contain little protein and other nutrients that vegetables do. Don't get caught up in the hype and babble.

This website has a lot of info from reformed "fruitarians":

Fruitarians only eat fruits (obviously). A fruit is classified as anything that has a seed.
They don't belief in eating vegetables because pulling a carrot from the ground kills the plant, for example. Yet picking an apple from a tree doesn't kill the tree.
Some foods you wouldn't expect are classified as fruits and are acceptable in a fruitarian diet. Cucumbers, tomatoes, seeds/nuts. As long as the seeds/nuts aren't roasted, they are considered fruits because they develop from pollinated flowers.
Some follow a fruitarian diet because they believe it is the natural diet of Adam and Eve.
Hence this, from Genesis 1 "Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food." Notice it says every SEED-bearing plant and every tree that has FRUIT. So that's why some fruitarians believe they should eat fruit and only fruit.

Some thoughts: Tree fruits and berries sound ethically perfect for "fruitarians," because the plant continues to live after you harvest it. Cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, bean pods, etc. are technically fruit; however, they grow on plants that die after one season. Is it ethical to grow a plant for your own use, when you know it is going to die? Can you make an argument that it IS ethical because annual plants are part of nature anyway?

About veggies, sure, cutting leaves off of a lettuce plant may "hurt" the plant. But nearly ALL crop plants have been artificially selected over hundreds or thousands of years to become crop plants for human enjoyment. Corn, cabbage, romaine lettuce, etc. do not grow in nature, but were bred for human consumption. Same with varieties of apples, pears, strawberries, etc. that you buy at the store or grow in your yard. Is it ok for you to eat something that is completely man-made?

In my opinion, the only thing dodgy about a fruititarian diet is the poor nutrition it would provide.

G'day Diane

Thank you for your question.

Fruitarians don't believe in eating vegetables because it involves plants dying, Others even refuse to eat seeds because that is killing future plants. Some people believe that our original diet was fruit because of Adam and Eve.

Personally, I have no problems in eating anything that tastes good,

I have attached sources for your reference.

Theres different types.
The eco-fruitarian wouldn't kill a plant because they want that plant to give them a food source in the future. So they would only eat parts of the plants that wouldn't kill it fruit and maybe some leaves.
The spiritual-fruitarian believes that fruits are something a plant offers up in hopes that we will spread its seed so therefore it is okay to only devour what the plant offers.

Fruitarians orFructarians of following a diet that comprises fruits, nuts and seeds, without animal products, vegetables and grains.Fruitarianism is a subset of veganism.

Some fruitarians will eat only what falls (or would fall) naturally from a plant; that is: foods that can be harvested without killing the plant. These foods consist primarily of culinary fruits, nuts, and seeds. According to author Adam Gollner, some fruitarians eat only fallen fruit. Some do not eat grains, believing it is unnatural to do so,and some fruitarians feel that it is improper for humans to eat seeds as they contain future plants, or nuts and seeds, or any foods besides juicy fruits.Others believe they should eat only plants that spread seeds when the plant is eaten. Others eat seeds and some cooked foods. Some fruitarians use the botanical definitions of fruits and consume pulses, such as many beans and peas or legumes, or pulses and legumes. Still further definitions include raw fruits, dried fruits, nuts, honey and olive oil,or fruits, nuts, beans and chocolate

I believe the point is that the fruit can be taken without harming the plant. The plant WANTS you to take fruit thats why it makes it so tasty :)

I believe that fruitarians also eat cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, eggplant, etc. All technically fruits. Doesn't seem as radical when you realize that.

Yes, That's a certain type of Fruitarian. But no need to go that far. If you add lettuce, it's the most natural diet for humans, and therefore, VERY healthy.

www.thefruitarian.com - Marathoner, eats lettuce, doesn't sell anything.

Its an ethical choice not health related at all & has been shown to be pretty chronic for health.
But of course these are the same people that will argue humans are purely herbivores despite science showing otherwise constantly

Vegetarian
we're omnivores deal with it it doesn't make being a vegetarian any less of a lifestlye

whoa fruitarians sound like they are reaching crazy cult status. Soon they may commit suicide since breathing release carbon dioxide. Existence= consumption

Remember that nuts and seeds are the fruits of some plants so these should be eaten as well

The fruitarian diet is one of the most UNNATURAL diets I have ever heard of. Humans are hunter gatherers. They ate anything they could get their hands on to survive. They were not worried about killing a plant to eat it, or killing an animal to eat it. If they didn't eat it they would die. They just did what came natural to them to survive. Which is eating an omnivores diet. Plants and animals dying to feed other animals is done EVERYWHERE in the animal kingdom. Its been that way for Millions of years. Its just Natural! Oh, and humans are also animals.
