I want to be Vegan, anyone help?!

Question: I want to be Vegan, anyone help?
My family are huge meat eaters, so it's kind of tough.
However i've explained and they understand, I to be honest am going to start my own shopping.
I'm planning on moving out soon also, but what am I restricted to?
Don't list the obvious such as meat, but.. like does this mean no milk, eggs etc?
I am doing this for various reasons, feeling sympathy for animals when I did eat meat & to be healthy.
Is changing your diet to Vegan hard at first? 10 points for the most helpful answer :) thank you.

Hi, if you're planning to go vegan then yes, this means no eggs, milk, honey, yogurt, cheese or anything containing these. Basically, nothing containing anything that comes from an animal.

What you can eat are:
Grains (rice, couscous etc)
Pasta
Potatoes
Any fresh, dried or tinned fruit and vegetables
Beans
Tofu
Nuts+seeds
Oreos (!)
Some breakfast cereals
Soya milk, cheese, yogurt
Bread
Porridge
Maple syrup
And anything else you can find with no animal products.

I honestly didn't find it hard to go vegan. Any meals you used to have with meat can be easily made with beans, tofu or nuts instead.
There are vegan versions of cheese, milk and yogurt so that wasn't a problem.

Here's an example of what I would eat in a day:

Breakfast- Porridge with soya milk, raisins+seeds
Snack- Dried fruit + nuts
Lunch- Rice and bean salad/ sandwich
Snack- Soya yogurt
Dinner- Bean curry/tofu stir fry

It may take a bit of thought at first while you're still adjusting to it, but soon it really will just feel like second nature, and honestly it is worth it!
Good luck with it.

Vegan

Vegan means no meat, milk, eggs, honey. Vegetarian means no meat.

Going Vegetarian should not be hard at all if you know how to cook the basics (pasta, rice, beans). Going Vegan may be a bit harder, depending upon what your diet consists of now.

Here's a list of non-Vegan ingredients if you decide to go Vegan: http://www.veganwolf.com/animal_ingredie…

If you decide to go Vegetarian, the main ingredients to stay away from, in addition to meat (chicken, beef, fish, et. al.) are rennet and gelatin.

I have been vegan for almost 4 years now. It is a way of life for me so it is not hard per say. It is only hard in the sense that most restaurants don't have vegan options so I don't eat out that much. I cook a lot. Most of my diet is tons of veggies, beans, rice, veggie burgers, fruit, oatmeal, whole wheat grains.
Kashi makes a lot of vegan frozen foods that I bring for lunch. The Veggie Tuscan bake is really good and vegan.
Kashi always puts Vegan at the beginning of their ingredient list if the meal is vegan.
Amy's also makes so many awesome vegan food options as well.

Do it gradually, start by gradually becoming vegitarian to give u time to shop round & find foods that suit. I think eggs are ok if free range, if your family want to eat meat maybe u could get them to choose as much free range stuff as pos.

own way of doing things

a vegan is some one who eats NO meat product or bi-products such as: meat(obviously), cheese, milk products, eggs

I would take this slowly at first. E.g. I know a 'vegan' who eats bought cakes - these have eggs in but she has them as an occasional treat although she wouldn't eat eggs as eggs.

Experiment with different types of vege protein. I hate tofu, but for some vegans it is the mainstay of their diet and they love it. If you combine a grain with a legume you will get a full protein. So cook brown rice in vege stock (keep the water in the fridge from your boiled veg for vege stock next time you cook), with veges boiled in with the rice, e.g. either peas, sweetcorn or beans (for your legumes) and then maybe carrots and mushrooms and broccoli. It is a meal in itself. My son likes this in a heatproof bowl, covered with tofu and put under the grill for a few minutes, I have it with grated cheddar (vege rather than vegan).

Baked potatoes are an easy vegan meal. We all love baked potatoes with coleslaw. My son also likes them with baked beans and a side salad.

Try mashing potato (cooked in veg stock for flavour) (instead of milk and butter put back some of the potato water you have drained and add lots of herbs) and then mix in veg like spring onions, sweetcorn, celery, tomato, etc. Bake in oven til brown on the top. This can be made in advance and frozen in meal sized portions.

Experiment with soya milk. It is an aquired taste. We never got used to drinking it cold, but use it for cooking. Health shops and some supermarkets sell long life soya puddings, soya yoghurts, etc. which are a good standby.

Remember most bread contains milk. I do know some 'vegans' who still eat this. I would suggest aiming to change this later when you can look around for vegan bread.

Instead of your breakfast cereal with milk you could either have it with soya milk (but check the cereal packaging - many cereals contain milk powder) or you could make porridge (2 heaped dessert spoons in a plastic or pyrex jug well covered with water, microwave on high for 1 minute, watching that it doesn't boil over), put in bowl and add fruit (either fresh, tinned, dried or frozen and defrosted).

Most supermarkets sell frozen vege meals, you will have to check the ingredients to see if they are vegan.

A good snack is celerey sticks filled with peanut butter (check the peanut butter does not contain milk - cassein). Also nuts and seeds - either raw or can be put in cooking, e.g. pine nuts and/or sunflower seeds are great in a stir fry.

Good luck!
