Meat contains fat. Fat layer is what keeps you warm. Native Americans, after eating buffalo would rub their hands all over their bodies because the fat/oil helps to keep them warm.

But since we now have blankets and heated homes, that practice is no longer necessary. And though being overtly thin is not healthy, you can get all the fat you need from your vegetarian diet.

"Healthy and unhealthy" does not solely rest on the diet more on the individual. Billions of people are omnivorous and to characterize all of them as having the "typical American diet" is wrong and misleading since Americans represent only a small fraction of the whole meat eating world. The most healthy societies like Japan, the various Mediterranean societies and The Pacific Islanders are all meat eating societies. India which has the highest vegetarians/vegans population density has one of the lowest life expectancies in the world (ranked 135th out of 191 countries). The US is ranked 24th despite it's supposed "typical unhealthy meat eating diet" (Japan is ranked 1st followed by meat eating Australia, France, Sweden and Spain respectively). That just shows you the diet alone is not a real determining factor to overall health and that any diet, omnivorous or vegetarian can be equally healthy as long as it is a balanced diet.

Vegetarians may have a slightly more difficult time keeping a balanced diet, than meat eaters, but the fact is that a lot of meat eaters don't even try, loading their plates with meat and carbohydrates and neglecting nutrient-rich fruits and veggies.

If you're cold all the time, you may simply have one of those metabolisms like mine. I'm small and thin-boned, and it's hard for me to gain enough body mass to stay warm (and I DO eat meat.)

However, if you're noticing other problems--such as cracked and peeling skin, especially at the corners of your mouth, sunken eyes, or very dry, 'lifeless' skin, you may want to see a dietician for advice on how to adjust your diet. Not that you have to eat meat, but you may need a little more of one nutrient or another, and a dietician can help you figure out what you need and where to get it.

You're cold because you're female, not because of your diet. I'm sitting here, comfortably, in short-sleeves and my non-vegetarian fiancée is all rugged up in several layers and complaining she's cold. Women have a different internal heating system to men. Women's body-heat is mainly concentrated in the torso, as opposed to men's being more evenly distributed throughout the body. This is why most women seem to have cold hands and feet a lot of the time. The concentration of heat in the torso in females is likely to be a survival thing. It keeps a growing foetus warm while it's developing, and that's a good thing.

To address your initial issue, I don't think that you feel colder than your dad because you are vegetarian. Consider these possible reasons:

1) Women are more likely to feel chilly than men, because our metabolisms are slightly slower than theirs are.
2) Guy's clothing seems to be hardier and made with thicker material, with higher cut neck-lines. Maybe wear a pair of tights/long socks under your jeans or put on an extra layer of long sleeves if it's comfortable.
3) It's winter-time. You could carry a container of hot tea with you at home, or take a warm bath to heat up your core temperature. Exercising will also make you feel warmer.

Have you heard of Forks Over Knives? Try to get your dad to see it with you. It's an incredible film describing how crucial a plant-strong diet is to health maintenance. It will be a feature film in March. I've seen 3 different screenings of it out here in Cali, and I want everyone I love who isn't eating well to watch this movie. Check to see if there are screenings where you live, and hopefully it will be at a theater near you this spring!

It's already been proven that vegetarians (vegans specifically) are healthier in every way compared to meat-eaters.

For your problem of being cold, I would get a blood test done to see if your iron count is low.

As long as you are eating a diet with lots of fruits and veggies and little processed food, there's no reason why you would be less healthy than others.

Vegan for over 10 years.

First of I am a vegan and consider myself much more healthy. I eat a very low Cholesterol, Sat.Fat and Trans fat diet. I eat many fruits and veggies and I make SURE I eat enough protien in a day. MANY meat eaters eat too much protien which is EXTREMELY unhealthy. As long as your doing it right (making sure you have varied types of grains, veggies, fruits, and of course taking vitamins) you should be fine. Meat eaters will always make little snide remarks.. I get it everyday. I am 23 and still get it from my father. I would say just make sure you do your research. Not on the internet though because there is too much false info. Go to a library and study nutrition and what foods complement or hinder each other example, Calcium hinders Iron, and Peanut Butter and Whole wheat will give you complete Protein. So go to your library, write down important things and learn health so when people make childish remarks you have knowledge and facts to back you up. :) Good luck

It depends. You have to remember that nutritional awareness is key. On average vegetarians are more nutritionally aware because they have to be in order to successfully cut out a food group in their diet.

The simple fact is if you're not going to do it properly and research into nutrition you could make your health worse than someone who eats meat. If you driver is health then nutritional awareness is key not the cutting out of a food group. And cutting out two food groups is never recommended (unless you have allergies).

From a personal point of view, I was an omnivore. I then became a vegetarian for 3 years, and have now been vegan since early this year.
I hardly ever get a cold now, and I used to get ill all the time.
I used to get bad period pains which stopped from my first period after going vegan.
I have more energy now - I used to be wanting to stay in bed, but now I want to get out of bed and get on with my day.
My digestive system is a lot happier.
I just feel more healthy in general.

lol at all the omnis spreading their b/s about meat being essential, then saying things like ' it's commen sance'. Wow, you are so intelligent, and btw you are omnivore, not carnivore -.-

And no, I would say vegetarians are way more healthy, I know so many omnis who are constantly ill, catch colds/flu and sickness etc, and this weekend I have had my first cold since becoming veg at 8, and have had no other sickness since then...

Vegan

Though most obese people aren't vegetarians, vegetarians can still be unhealthy. Because even if you don't eat meat you still have to watch what you eat. As a vegetarian I know that losing the protein, amino acids and such from meat can make you weaker, and if you don't make up for it with other foods then you could end up worse off than some that does eat meat.

No. Lots of my female co-workers complain about being cold all of the time and they all eat meat. I often have a fan going in my office because I think the heat is too high. I don't mean to be sexist, but the first people to complain about being cold are almost always women.

Is your father a medical doctor or a registered dietitian? Just because he said something like that doesn't mean he knows what he's talking about.

Vegetarian since 1984, I tend to be hot most of the time, married to a dietitian.

well, vegetarian diets do tend to be healthier, though you should be eating protein supplements (tofu, vitamins etc) for the loss of protein from not eating meat. But some vegetarians, do eat a lot of junk food, so that's debatable. As long as u know you're eating your fruits, veggies, etc. you should be good to go. And yes, you should stick to your beliefs, it's your body.

Your not cold because you don't eat meat, thats just foolish to think that way. You are cold because your not getting enough proper vitamins- most are not from meat. I suggest you broaden your choices a little bit. The more colorful the fruit and veggie the better
I have been vegan for over a year and people marvel as to why I can be outside without a coat at all in the winter so...
feel free to email/message/IM me with any more questions. I'd be happy to help

Hello

Go to your local hospital and do a survey, ask everyone who is sick if they eat meat and you will have your answer. Meat eaters are very ill people.

Lots of Love

hear the news? americans in record numbers (epidemic proportions) are morbidly obese. of those [millions] a couple are veggies. the rest are carnivores. think about it.

Countless studies done by the most renowned doctors have proven time and time again that a low fat vegan diet is the best diet for human beings.

vegan :D

Vegans/Vegetarians tend to be more healthy than meat eaters, that is if we have a balanced diet and get all our nutrients

Not necessarily more healthy than vegetarians. But I'd say, across the board, meat eaters are (long term) healthier than vegans.

Any diet can be unhealthy. Eating meat doesn't stop you from eating other junk food, chips, candy, sweet drinks, etc. Not eating meat doesn't stop you from eating a lot of those things, either.

I think you can be healthy as a lacto-ovo vegetarian; the more I learn, the less I believe you can be a healthy long term vegan. Read the link below:

Being cold because your skinny is much healthier than people that overheat because they eat the wrong foods. Being moderately cold only slows down your cells and therefore would slow down your aging. Overweight people are being cooked alive because their body heat cannot escape through their fat. Thats why overweight people sweat in inappropriate situations, very unhealthy to be like that.

yeh meat contains a good source of protein and vegs eat veg all the time lol

common sence

of course they are not....the one who eats meat will be stronger
