People say I look pale, am I getting the right nutrients?!

Question: People say I look pale, am I getting the right nutrients?
Since being a vegan, people are commenting that I look pale, I dont really understand why, I eat loads of fruits and vegetables, take supplements including B12 and eat beans and legumes. What foods contain nutrients that vegans need? Am I lacking iron? Also someone said to me being a vegan does not help with memory and brain power, since Im a student Im quite worried about that, whats your thoughts?

Hi, are you taking in enough calories? Eating healthy foods is important but you also need to make sure you're eating enough. Nuts and dried fruit are good, wholesome ways to get your calories up.

It may be that you're low on iron. Try increasing your intake of dark green leafy veg, dried dates and fortified foods such as soya milk.

In regards to the comment about memory and brain power, they may have been referring to essential fatty acids which are vital for brain function. Vegan sources of these include nuts, seeds and avocado. If you get a decent amount of these then you have no need to worry about brain power. I actually found my thoughts were clearer after I became vegan!

generally that can be as sign of many things, tiredness, overworking or illness
but anemia can cause paleness and yes if you have low iron you can have that, and you can have low iron due to not eating meat and not supplimenting your ironwith more iron rich foodsand or suppliments

maybe see your doctor for an iron test and in the mean time up your intake of foods with iron

the thing with the memory is mostly about omega 3 6 and 9, which we get from fish oils, but veges can take flaxseed ;-)

Everyone is different. When I became vegan, I noticed I could think better, and had more energy.

As for iron, you can get that from fruits and vegetables.

People envy you. You should consider the way you feel, not what others tell you to feel. If you feel yourself healthy you shouldn't worry about others. They should worry about themselves.
Also, go to make some blood analysis so you'll know for sure how healthy you are.

Experience

Perhaps you need to get out in the sun more often? If you honestly feel ok, don't worry about what others say. BUT if you're ignoring health issues because you don't want to admit veganism isn't working, you should be honest with yourself.

You could be pale because of that.
You need a lot of iron and protien.
And even though your not eating animal products, you still need to take a vitamin that gives you the same suppliments that they do.

LISTEN to your body and not the worries in your head. Stop 'starving' yourself and go get a burger. :-)
