Are you still considered a vegetarian if you eat foods containing gelatin?!


Question: Are you still considered a vegetarian if you eat foods containing gelatin?
I've been a vegetarian for approximately 4 months now.. I try to avoid gelatin when possible, but sometimes it's really hard to. You wouldn't believe how many things contain gelatin! Or.. Maybe you would because you're posting on a vegan/vegetarian forum. Anywho, what are your thoughts on this?

No. Gelatin is not vegetarian and is easy too avoid. I am not sure what you are eating but gelatin has always been fairly easy to avoid unless you eat a lot of processed junk. I never had any problems avoiding gelatin the main things I ate with gelatin as a carnist were Jello, gummies and the occasional marshmallows and so I just stopped eating them or found vegetarian or vegan alternatives. I never really ate a ton of yogurt but as a vegetarian when I did I got it at a co-op that didn't stock any gelatin products and it was all natural few ingredient type stuff or it was vegan.

I mean your best bet is too avoid all animal products in your life that way you don't have to worry about gelatin. If it comes from an animal don't use it or eat it or buy it or have anything to do with it. Always read labels and be wary of all animal ingredients. Most of the stuff you are eating is quite similar to gelatin as in it comes from similar sourcing using similar amounts of cruelty and animal exploitation.

some would say no because it is slaughter by product and derived directly from animal tissue but really you cannot find in any " vegetarian rule book" (which does not exist anyway) that says you "can't" eat anything including gelatin.

As to the one that says since an animal was killed, reminder that "vegetarian" refers to diet only and nothing else. In fact killing an animal or being a butcher won't affect your "vegetarian "status" as long as you don't eat your product.
Gelatin is an organic compound derived from skin and connective tissue (not hooves and horns. Gelatin is extracted from collagen. Hooves and horns contain keratin not collagen) of animals. No animal is killed specifically to extract gelatin. Eat it or don't eat it, up to you entirely. Whatever you decide, it's your life. If you say you are a vegetarian and eat gelatin, I won't argue with you.



Gelatin is derived from boiling collagen out of the skin, bones, and connective tissue of animals such as pigs. It's not a vegetarian product, because an animal must be killed to make it, the same as an animal must be killed to get their muscle tissue or any other part for food. Is someone who boils collagen out of human beings and eats it still considered a cannibal?

It's crazy! Soups, dressings, candy, marshmallows, jello (well thats given), some medications, shredded wheat cereal, etc.

My thoughts are that it's personal choice, most vegetarians i know try to avoid gelatin, but i admit it; its hard. I don't usually run into it very often because i eat alot of unprocessed foods, but it always pops up when i least expect it.

I consider someone who considers themselves to be a vegetarian, a vegetarian. Some people get really and weird when it comes to the title of the way they eat is... i honestly don't care.

But even a title conscious person probably would consider you still a vegetarian even if you eat a bit of gelatin every so often.

The general rule for vegetarianism is "Don't eat anything an animal was killed to make".

So... No, I don't think gelatin is in any way a vegetarian substance. I think it's good you're trying though, and just keep in mind for the future what does and doesn't have gelatin. You say it's hard but a lot of people (such as myself) live on a completely vegan diet - and there are A LOT of things with animal products in them other than gelatin. It gets easier with time.

I was a vegetarian for 20 years and decided somewhere along the line to disregard the whole gelatin and rennet issue. I believed that what I was doing mattered and that these small details were not a compromise. I was fine with what I ate. I was not part of some fussy club, what i chose to eat or not was up to me. **** everybody else.



A lot of people will say that you are not veg. Just try to do the best that you can. You can slowly eliminate things containing gelatin. You don't have to be too hard on yourself. I will still be ok with you calling yourself vegetarian. haha

It's dead animals. Vegetarians don't eat dead animals or their by-products. Get it? Don't eat gelatin if you plan on being a vegetarian. Same goes for rennet, shellac, carmine, etc.

Sorry, but a vegetarians don't eat meat or products that contain animal bi products. If the rest of us can figure out how to not eat gelatin, it must not be impossible.



No, if an animal died to get you food you can't eat it. Gelatin comes from bones, so it shouldn't be on a vegetarian's menu.

Just don't eat anthing that says "meat" or a meat of any sort.



Gelatin is a product of boiling animal products. not even the good one, like we are talking skulls, feet, bones, brains...... stuff like that. I eat tones of meat and that stuff grosses me out. If your going to eat that you should just eat a steak and get it over with.



Gelatin is normally made from horse hooves, so you're not veggie. If you're using one based in seaweed, you're ok.
