Is the sugar used in sanitarium products vegan?!

Question: Is the sugar used in sanitarium products vegan?
I just bought a packet of vegie delights: not burgers ... and it says that it has sugar in it. I know that some sugar is made using the charred bone of animals, so I looked up what sanitarium had to say about their sugar, and this is the statement I found:

"Both the sugar and flour used in Sanitarium products are suitable for vegetarians. Sanitarium does not use any animal derived ingredients in its food products or in the production of ingredients. Previously some Sanitarium products have contained L-Cysteine, however this has been derived from non animal sources, not animal feathers or hair." (Details correct as at October 2008)

What do you think? It says 'suitable for vegetarians' but would you consider it suitable for vegans?
Thanks!

i personally eat 'not burgers' and have considered myself vegan for 4 years. I think it would be very hard to find out if the sugar sanitarium uses is sourced from a manufacturer which does not use bone char in the production of its sugar. You might try emailing sanitarium to find out about it.

You could try visiting the Sanitarium website and following links to their user forum. Even if you don't find the answer, there's some interesting reading there anyway.

Edited: I have just revisited the Sanitarium site and could not find the forums. It appears they now have a Q&A type set up. Still, it may be worth asking your question there.
