Its a big decision but anyways congrats. And don't you worry..in case if you think that you may not get your protein supplement after you quit non-vegetarian food, then its just a myth. Vegetarian food too have good supplements of protein, which if you include in your regular meals you may never have to worry about. Try including a lot of whole grains, legumes and fruits. Milk and eggs are good source of protein so have a regular intake of milk, egg, cheese, buttermilk, whey and curd. Try cottage cheese, it is said to have good protein content. If you are worried about the fats it would include, then try out low fat products like skimmed milk, low fat cheese, tofu, soy milk, only egg-whites etc. But do add a lot of legumes, whole grains and vegetables like cabbage, artichokes, beet root, broccoli, mushrooms, Brussels sprouts and many more vegetables. In legumes you can try kidney beans, lentils and soy beans. If you talk about grains then oatmeal, wheat, wheat germ and brown rice are good for you. And finally in fruits try apples, grape, oranges, peach, pine apple and few more fruits.

Unless you're starving yourself or eating mostly junk food, you're getting protein. You really don't need that much--about 0.3 to 0.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight a day. Too much protein is bad for your kidneys, and excess animal protein (including dairy and eggs) strips calcium from your bones.

You can still cook tofu in various seasonings, and it really won't taste like meat. You can also try tempeh, an Indonesian food made of fermented soy. It has a nutty, chewy texture.

Vegetarians still eat eggs, youre thinking vegan. You can eat tofu, tofu is FULL of protein! Put it in with everything you cook and eat. You cant taste it all, it takes on the flavor of whatever you are eating. The texture will get to you at first. Its like eating a wet, flavorless, sponge. But it really really helps and trust me protein is important. You can also take supplements!

Ive been a vegetarian for 4 years

I have been a vegetarian for about 3 years and I have a friend who has been for 13 years, another for 16- none of us have suffered any protein defficiency in our lives so it's not a huge problem- none of us go crazy on the extra protein, just stick to what we would normally eat. It is important to have protein in your diet, and there are lots of tasty subs like beans (even baked beans- yum!) lentils, sugar beans, lima beans, pretty much any type of bean, nuts (including coconuts, they actually have a lot of protein! Suprising right?) and pretty much all your normal dairy like yogurt, cheese, milk and margarine even.
If you are eating all (or even most) of the above you shouldn't have to worry about a thing, hope this helped!

HI,
I've been a vegetarian for a little over a year and let me tell you I don't miss meat one bit. Except when I see a chick-fil-a, but that only lasts a minute or two!
Let me just tell you that as a vegetarian, you will still be able to get PLENTY of protein. That's THE most annoying question I get...there is no such thing as protein deficiency in this country. It's called kwashiorkor and it's mostly in Africa...those kids with the huge pot bellies?

Now that that's cleared up...good things with protein:
fat free greek yogurt (20g per cup!)
beans, chickpeas
nuts, seeds
dairy (soy or regular, almond milk is amazing)
soy products
whole grains (i recommend quinoa over rice)
even vegetables have some if you eat enough
seitan
tempeh (try this honey sesame tempeh quinoa recipe, it's SO good. You can use any kind of stir fry sauce like spicy ginger teriyaki. I know tempeh looks weird, but it is chewy like meat and tastes like whatever you season it with..not like tofu, ick!)

Books I recommend:
The Kind Diet-Alicia Silverstone
Skinny ***** and Skinny ***** in the Kitch
Everything Vegetarian
I also save recipes from cooking light or any magazine, you can find them at cookinglight.com or Clean Eating has really good ones.

Vegetarian, highly educated about nutrition (university and personal research) I've considered becoming a registered dietician.

Being a vegetarian means you dont eat meat or fish.
So you can have eggs, milk, cheese, yoghurt, nuts, chick peas, beans, lentils etc stuff like that
Type in google.. "list of protien foods" and it should give you a list of them
Also you can eat Quarn - its very yummy and kind of tastes like meat but its not.

Pretty much everything has protein. If it's not just sugar, alcohol, and oil...it has protein in it. Protein deficiency is only a problem in developing countries. Don't lose any sleep over it.

Beans, pulses, lentils. You can also try meat substitutes.

Beans, beans, beans.

All living plant contain protein so should not be a problem.
