To all vegetarians- why do we have to give up dairy?!

Question: To all vegetarians- why do we have to give up dairy?
I just decided to try to become a vegetarian yesterday, and I was just wondering, why can't we eat dairy prodcuts? It's not like milking a cow is gunna murder it? I've been eating cheese and drinking milk, mostly to fill up my empty longing for meat.

Also, what are some easy-vegetarian meals I can make? Me and the animals thank you :)

I DIDN'T!

Hi, most vegetarians still eat dairy.

Vegans do not eat dairy, the reason being that the animals are treated very badly. In order to product milk, a cow must give birth, and the calf is taken off and killed so that it does not use up the milk. Also although giving milk does not kill the animal, it is almost always killed as soon as it is too old to produce milk.

Easy vegetarian meals are things like lentil soup, bean curries and casseroles, tofu stir fries, jacket potato, pasta in tomato sauce and non-meat sandwiches.

A vegetarian diet relates to a plant-based diet but also refrains from eating meat. Vegans don't eat meat or dairy or eggs. They eliminate anything derived from an animal. Vegetarians can eat dairy but there is sad truth about it. When cows can no longer produce milk, they are sent to slaughter because then they are no longer valuable or profitable. Also, when a dairy cow gives birth, it's offspring is either raised for veal (male) or a female will follow in the mother's footsteps and be impregnated to produce milk so many times per year and then when the milk slacks, she goes to slaughter. There is also sad truth about eggs, the one that I think about most are the male chicks who serve no purpose in the egg industry and are somehow discarded at birth by either being thrown into a trash can, one on top of the other and then suffocated when the bag is gathered and taken out, they are thrown alive into grinding machines which leaves most of them still conscious and suffering. These are the most popular methods of disposing of them. I don't know how those people sleep at night????!!

You can be a vegetarian and still consume dairy products; although, I would consume less of them for health reasons. Dairy is really hard for your body to digest. Instead of drinking dairy milk, try almond milk instead. It actually has more calcium than dairy milk and is supplemented with a good source of vitamin B12. And it is delicious! Do not worry about consuming dairy products at this early point in your experience. It is a slow transition for some to go totally vegan. I'm still a vegetarian but follow a mostly vegan diet. I believe in approaching major lifestyle changes at a slow and steady pace. Anyway, welcome to vegetarianism! Peace.

You don't have to...?

Also, cows (just like any other mammal) only produce milk after giving birth to a calf. So in a typical dairy farm the cows are artificially inseminated (this is done by reaching up the cow's rectum, then pushing a metal rod into their vagina to inject semen) annually, and then have their calves taken away to be made into veal or beef. That's why many say you SHOULDN'T eat dairy, however you can eat whatever you like - you don't "have to" give up dairy.

Not all vegetarians give up dairy, or eggs for that matter, and you certainly don't have to either. It's a matter of choice, and how far you're willing to go. Basic vegetarian rules are not to eat meat (most people also include fish in this).

Pastas are great if you're looking for an easy meal. If you're still eating cheese, you can make great baked pasta. The easiest way to make it is to boil the pasta, and strain when complete. Couple with a tomato sauce (bolognese, marinara, arrabiata), and mix well. Pour the finished pasta/sauce combination into a baking pan, and cover with a layer of cheese. Bake at 350 degrees f. until cheese is lightly browned. Should take about half an hour. Serve with a healthy, mixed green salad. Hope this helps :)

many vegitarians eat dairy products

they are called lacto-vegitarians

some don't looking at the suffering that dairy cows are put through, and knowing that the dairy industry also supports the veal industry (they have to give birth regulary to keep up milk production, and if the calf is male, its turned into veal)

Some vegetarians do eat dairy products and some also do eat eggs. It depends on what you want to eat.
here are some of my favorites

stir-fry with rice
potato pancakes
waffles with fruits
pb&j
pasta with sauce
stuffed potato
vegetable paella
veggie sandwich (lettauce, sauce, and lots of veggies!)

You don't have to give up dairy if you don't want to.

And if you're concerned about the animal welfare, check out the raw milk sites. Better for you and the animals are grass fed and treated more humanely than grain fed animals living in pens.

Some vegetarians do eat dairy, precisely because you don't have to kill an animal to get it. Others (technically vegans) avoid all animal products. It's a personal choice, nobody is going to force you one way or the other.

Vegetarians can eat most dairy.

Some people stop eating dairy because the cows are treated pretty horribly, and also because dairy isn't that good for you.

Most yogurt has gelatin in it.
Cheese uses an enzyme called rennet to change the milk into cheese and they get that enzyme from the lining of animals stomachs.
Then the dairy cows are treated badly
etc.

ehh

i dnt think vegetarians give up dairy

tht is vegans

maybe you should reserch a wee bit more before commiting 2 somthing like tht

My best friend is a vegetarian she eats cheese
cheese= Dairy :)

Check out this movie www.meat.org and that will show you why some vegetarians choose not to consume milk.

Because a lot (not all) of the dairy cows are treated horribly.

read the book white washed

we dont ;-)
thats your choice

I think is a personal choice. But you shouldn't substitute the amount of meat you use to eat with cheese and dairy, it's not healthy (cheese has a lot of fat and sodium).

I'm a vegetarian and still eat dairy. I only buy milk from local cows, and I've had the opportunity to visit the places where they keep them. I know how they treat them, and believe me, they're treated like queens! Every day, as soon as the sun comes up they take them outside and the cows spend the whole day (until late afternoon) roaming free, eating grass, spending the day with their calves and other cows... Actually, some of the guys who work there gave each cow a different name lol

The point is, giving up dairy it's a personal choice. If your goal is to be a strict vegetarian, then you should give up dairy. But for some people this can't be done overnight. Many strict vegetarians and vegans that I know began their journey as lacto-vegetarians, and gradually decreased the consumption of animal products.

Here are some vegetarian meals you might enjoy:
-Breakfast: oatmeal, cereal, smoothies, pancakes, bagels, scrambled eggs (if you still eat eggs)
-Lunch/dinner: veggie sandwich, veggie burger, salad, soup, veggie pizza, bean burrito, peanut butter & jelly sandwich, pasta (with veggies, tomato sauce, tofu... actually, the possibilities for pasta are endless!), Ramen noodles (oriental flavored are vegan), potatoes (mashed, fried, baked...)
-Snacks/desert: ice cream, yogurt, cookies, trail mix, nuts, pop corn, chips & salsa

Also, there are many "vegetarian meat" options out there that you might want to try.

Good luck!
