It depends on what they were picked in. Almost all contain large amounts of salt and/or vinegar. These are preservatives. But there are still some bacteria that can live in those environments. Unless you made them yourself the package will have an expiration date on it.
pickles are jarred in a brine, which is mainly salt, and if they have an expiration date on the jar, abide by it.
They expire when the Expiration Date is Due.
