can soymilk cause breast cancer?!


Question: Can soymilk cause breast cancer?
I drink 1 cup everyday and never drink milk, is that bad? i cant have milk im allergic.

It is good for health bt u also have to eat milk



There are studies that say soy causes breast cancer and there are studies that say soy prevents breast cancer. Two of my friends had breast cancer and they never drank soymilk or ate tofu and I'm sure there are also people with breast cancer who consume soy regularly. I think the benefits of soy in moderation outweigh the risks, but if you're concerned about it you could drink almond, coconut, hemp or rice milk.



Two facts first:

There is no actual scientific evidence that any food, including soya, causes, prevents, contributes to or affects the progress of any cancer (the exception being high consumption of red and processed meat, which is a major risk factor for colorectal cancers).

Nobody knows what causes cancer; the finest scientific minds in the world whose life's work it is to find out don't yet know, so anyone who claims that 'X causes cancer' is repeating hearsay and rumour.

These two facts are as true of breast cancer as of all the other 200+ types of cancer.

Soya proteins contain isoflavones that can mimic a weak oestrogen effect. It's not the same as the oestrogen your own body makes though - it is 1,000 times weaker than your own body's oestrogen, but it's this that has led to concerns (and rumour) about oestrogen dependent breast cancer (not all breast cancers are pestrogen dependent).

There are those in the field who argue that isoflavones may be of help in preventing breast cancer or be beneficial to women who have had breast cancer.

There is current research into whether increasing phyto oestrogens in the diet helps to prevent breast or prostate cancer, and a study in 2002 found that women with the highest levels of soya products in their diets had the lowest breast density - higher breast density being associated with higher breast cancer risk.

Women with the highest levels of isoflavones in their diet are reported to have significant risk reductions for uterine cancer.

I have had oestrogen dependent breast cancer, and have never been warned against soya; nor have any of the many women with breast cancer I've met through breast cancer support networks.

Check with any reputable breast cancer information service or charity - go to their websites and do a search for 'breast cancer risk factors'; you won't find soya consumption listed anywhere.

Breakthrough Breast Cancer addresses the issue of soya quite thoroughly. It says:

''Because phyto-oestrogens can act like oestrogen they can have similar effects to oestrogen, but at high doses they may actually block the effects of oestrogen. ''

and

''Some studies found that regularly eating foods that contain phyto-oestrogens might lower the risk of breast cancer, whereas others found that they have no effect.''

Soya in moderation is fine, and one cup a day is certainly in moderation



From what I understand people that have had or do have Estrogen related cancer should not have soy. I do not know if this means you should cut back on soy or not I would think it depends on your history or your family history. This might be something you want to discuss with your doctor, if you are a woman discuss with your OB.
You could try Rice milk or Almond milk as well. Or just omit it all together. I think humans are the only "animal" that continues to consume milk after being weaned.



I don't think soy "causes" breast cancer. But it does contain hormones that feed some breast cancers. So if you have a history or family history of breast cancer, you might want to limit your intake of soy.
