I'm going vegan, yet I don't have much food to eat.....?!

Question: I'm going vegan, yet I don't have much food to eat.....?
I'm a 16 year old girl. I've decided to go vegan. My parents accept the fact that I am now a vegan, however, they said that they wouldn't buy me food. They say that I should eat what everyone else eats. We have vegetables such as: corn, green beans, broccoli, potatoes and we have beans such as: pork n beans, baked beans, lima beans stuff like that. I am allergic to milk, so anything with milk is automatically out. My parents don't buy much fruit. The only fruit they do buy are apples, grapes, and bananas and my brother and his friends eats it all up. I have a part time job, but I don't make that much money. I was thinking about taking $50 out of my next pay-check and spending it on groceries for myself. Do you think this will be enough? If not can you give me an estimate of how much it would cost, just for myself?

Thanks :)

Also, could you give me a list of things I should consider buying when I go shopping?

$50 will probably last you about 1 week if you spend your money wisely. Please look at this site for GREAT ideas for vegans!! P.S. If your allergic to milk try Soy Milk!! http://www.vegan.org/going_vegan/eating_vegan/index.html

Tofu! It's great. You can put basically any sauce on it and there are so many tofu recipes out there. It's one of the most versatile vegan foods. Get some different crackers (as long as they are vegan).. or different types of rice.

you should web search vegan diet

Are you sure you know what vegan is?

Pork & beans are not vegan, they are made with pork.

Not all canned beans are vegan, some are flavored with animal products.

Milk is not vegan... even if you could drink it.

Vegan means no milk, no cheese, no yogurt, no butter, nothing with gelatin, no honey, no eggs, nothing made with eggs (cake, bread, etc), nothing made with animal fats like lard, nothing made with broth or anything.

What you need to buy is basically what you like. Sounds like your parents have veggies covered (but don't eat packaged veggies, or veggies made in broth or with butter or sauces as they are probably not vegan; most salad dressings are not vegan; mayo is not vegan)

Might want to get some protien products: beans, lentils, seeds, nuts, soy products, etc... again, check labels... anything that came from any part of an animal, living or dead, means not vegan.

Might want to also look for vegan snacks.

Sure you can mix rice & mashed potatoes with veggie broth, herbs & seasonings, soy sauce, etc, but if you put butter or cheese on your rice or potatoes they are not vegan, so watch what you mix.

Have you considered this might be too big a change at one time? Maybe start out reducing meat intake and increasing other sources of protien until you start getting the hang of it? If you shock and stress yourself over it, you're just going to get frustrated.
