How much does eating red meat affect digestion?!


Question: How much does eating red meat affect digestion?
I eat a very meat-heavy diet. I have steak a few times a week for dinner. The days I don't, beef is usually somehow incorporated into the dish (spaghetti, stroganoff etc.). Anyways, for the last two days I've had very painful stomach cramps. I think it might have to do with the red meat. If I switch to a vegatarian diet for let's say a week, would these cramps go away?

You can not assume it is the meat in your diet causing the cramping. It can be caused by an over abundance of some types of fruits and in some cases an over abundance of raw roughage. I would certainly consult a physician.



I don't know if your cramps have anything to do with eating red meat.If they are very painful and they've been going on for a while, it would be worth going to a doctor in case there is something wrong with your appendix or some other cause.

That said, it takes about three days for humans to digest meat compared to about half an hour or so for an orange. And pieces of meat tend to stay in the digestive tract which in humans is very long compared to that of mainly carnivore animals such as cats who have short digestive systems that allow the meat to go through quite quickly. So even if you don't want to give up meat altogether, it's well worth having a few meat free days. Just make sure that you learn some tasty vegetarian recipes ( of which there are many ) so that you enjoy your food rather than see the vegetarian days as a trial to be endured.



In addition to all the info about little fiber/constipation and heavy to digest, as well as poor nutrition, etc., there's at least one more thing if you aren't actually allergic to beef or are beginning to have actual diseases like diverticulitis, colitis, Crohn's Disease, etc.

(Btw, I'm assuming by "stomach cramps" you actually mean they're in your intestines, not up in your stomach...a different thing altogether.)

Many people in fact seem to have intestinal problems after eating quick-cooked beef, but not after eating long-cooked beef, as they get older...in other words, it may not have been a problem before but now is.
So things like hamburger and prime rib and steak can cause intestinal distress, but long cooked meat in stews, chilis, braised roasts, etc. won't be a problem. See if you fall into that camp.



well, meat slows down the digestion incredibly. so you might be constipated. and, you are more likely to get a little case of food poisoning by eating that. sometimes its a little bug that doesn't affect you much, but you feel a little cramppy and all that. and if you switch, like for a week, that's actually a little harder on the digestive system actually cuz your body is going thru a change. especially if you are used to eating that much meat. personally, i cut down gradually on meat before become vegetarian, actually i was dancing back and forth for about 6 months and then i cheated a couple of times in another 6 months, but, my didn't really take my body for a surprise by doing that, see?

As a vegan, yes, I recommend cutting back on meat. When I was a meat-eater, I used to be very constipated and I would have cramps in my lower stomach. Now that I'm eating the proper amount of fiber and ruffage, my body works cleanly and like clockwork.

But it might be something else. Try a vegetarian diet for a bit--but if the pain doesn't subside, you should get it checked.



Most likely they will go away. I used to get bad cramps from dairy so you should at least limit your dairy intake for the week or so, too. A mistake would be to replace the meat in your diet with dairy.

Eat lots of grains and things with fiber. Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. Don't forget to drink water. You may want to drink a tea that aides digestion. There are many to choose from.

Yes, I think a sort of "detox" for a week or two would be helpful.

Cramps and meat have nothing to do with each other.
If you have cramps, then either you ate too much fiber and have gas (which bloats the intestine, making nerve endings fire and cause pain), OR you ate something bad and could have food poisoning.
Doesn't necessarily mean meat had anything to do with it.
ALL food poisoning is caused by microbes -- NOT food.

Meat, especially red meat, it pretty harsh on your stomach. You're eating a lot of cholesterol and fat. Eating vegetarian 1-2 days a week would probably help out a lot. Just make sure you replace your meat with another nutrient-dense food such as soy products or nut/seeds.



it takes about a week for the meat to leave your system, so it might be more benificial to eliminate meat for a bit longer, maybe 2 weeks or so. Until than, enjoy the rotting meat in your intestines that is causing your stomach distress.



Hi, meat is very low in fibre which means it can interfere with your digestion and can cause stomach aches.
Cutting it out for a while sounds like a good idea.
Try to replace it wit high fibre foods such as beans, grains and vegetables.

Red meat is known to be difficult to digest. Just take some over the counter meds for your stomach and drink lots of water and eat lighter for the next few days and you should feel back to normal.



You don't have to completely go vegetarian for those reasons. You probably just don't get enough fiber and good foods for balance.



Meat is not the best for you. If you eat it cook it well done. Vegetarian is the best diet for your digestive system
