Can bell peppers be eaten raw?!

Question: Can bell peppers be eaten raw?
I love raw bell peppers (green ones) but I've recently heard that they shouldn't be eaten raw?
I eat them a lot with most foods and things.

Answers:

Bell peppers? Sure they can. I put them in salads all the time. Try the other colors, too. They're a little sweeter, but just as yummy.

The reason that people suggest you not eat bell peppers raw is because they are a nightshade plant. Nightshade plants have a chemical designed to poison insects which might try to consume them...when you eat a nightshade plant you consume this chemical.

Of course we are much bigger than an insect so it is not so harmful for us, but many individuals do have problems with nightshade plants, especially those with arthritis or other immune system illnesses.

This article on nightshade plants will give you the full scoop on them...hope it helps.

Absolutely. I eat them raw all the time. I actually prefer them that way.

I know what you mean about the green ones too! Why is it that you can't buy a packet of bell peppers without at least one green one in there!

Yes, it's up to you. The Green Bell's are not as ripe as the others (that's why they're green). If you want to eat them raw, try the red ones (yummy), much sweeter, but usually more expensive.

They're fine to eat raw. Some people consider heating vegetables to be a negative - that it damages vitamins and enzymes that might have beneficial value.

they taste more flavorful when raw in my opinion. a little extra sourness you can't taste when they have been cooked. maybe from the vitamin c that has not been heat damaged.

Yes you can. The red and yellow ones are actually sweeter than the green ones. They taste good dipped in Ranch dressing!

You can, but they may be not too easy to digest as if eaten cooked.
There's always Beano.

Yes you can
