I'm a vegetarian and have been for 2 years now but it is making me ill, should I eat meat?!

Question: I'm a vegetarian and have been for 2 years now but it is making me ill, should I eat meat?
I dislike vegetables and now I'm even starting to dislike quorn, it sounds silly but it is true. I feel unhealthy, tired and weak all the time. Eating meat goes against my beliefs but it's got to the point where I feel my body is craving the protein. Should I eat meat or not?

Hi. This sounds like it's an unhealthy diet in general making you feel ill, not the fact it's a vegetarian one. A vegetarian diet can be so very good for you when done right; it is not supposed to make you feel ill!

What have you replaced the meat with? A healthy vegetarian diet is not just about cutting out meat, you have to put something in its place.

Make sure you have a source of protein at each meal. This can be things like beans, nuts or soya products like tofu.
Base each meal around complex carbs such as grains, potatoes, cereal, bread etc.

Snacking throughout the day on nuts, wholegrain toast or cereal is a good way to keep your energy up.

Also I'm afraid you need to make sure you're getting a good amount of fruit and vegtables as these are obviously important for keeping your body in good condition. There must be some you like! Tomato sauce on pasta, chopped onions and garlic, beans and lentils all count as a portion so try your best to get some in your diet.

If it's done properly a vegetarian diet will not make you feel ill.
Good luck with it.

Try going to your doctor and asking to have a blood test. There are plenty of reason to feel weak and tired, from SAD to stress at work, so don't automatically dump it all at your diets door. Also, if it does happen to be your diet you could ask to see a nutritionist and get professional help to overhaul your food regime. There's no reason you can't have a healthy balanced vegetarian diet, so if you've been eating a lot of junk food, even if it's vegetarian, then it will, of course, affect you.
Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

Here are the facts: There are no proteins that you can only get from meat, in fact proteins that you eat are broken down into their constituent parts, amino acids, and hence any food containing all 8 essential amino acids will suffice instead of meat. These foods include soya and animal products such as eggs and milk. If you dislike vegetables then it seems likely that your ill feeling is down to not eating enough of them. I am a vegetarian and a Biochemistry student. I absolutely assure you eating meat will not solve your problem, and although you may think you are craving protein you are not.

Have you tried protein shakes? There are heaps of vegetarian options available - check out myprotein.co.uk or bodyshapers.co.uk. If you dislike vegetables, try hiding them in sauces or soups, and make sure you're eating plenty of fruit. Other good vegetarian protein sources are cottage cheese, eggs and skimmed milk. Maybe you could speak to a nutritionist or something about your diet? I think that it's worth at least trying to find an alternative before going against your beliefs. Hope that helps - good luck xxx

atleast take vitamins then. but if you dont like veggies etc then your vegetarian "adventures" are not quite going to work. it might go against your beleifs, as alot of people are against killing animals for food, but if you are not geting the right nutrients are you willing to die for that?

I doubt eating meat will suddenly make you healthy.

If your body is craving protein, eat more eggs or something.

If you really want to eat meat though, just do it. If you don't get healthier then you'll know it's not a protein thing.

Honestly, I'd go see your doctor for advice if I were you.

So basically, it isn't VEGETARIANISM making you ill,
but your unwillingness to eat healthy foods.

I have news for you. Vegan, vegetarian, or omnivore, someone who does not eat vegetables will sooner or later suffer health problems.

Being vegetarian is the healthy way to live life. You are not eating vegetables & then you are saying that being vegetarian is making you ill. Start some exercise, eat natural food including fruits. You will get a nice benefit from this.

You can eat tofu which has protein BUT i recommend getting the food brand Morning Star it taste sort of like meat but its actually soy plus its a good source of protein.

hoped i help!

Unless you are going to seek out a nutritionally balance diet then you should not considered cutting out a food group.

only you can resolve this , try for yourself .

u should see a doctor for better advice...if u hav problems with vegetables...u can always take supplementary pills ....

hope this helps :D

Hi there, i was wondering if you could tell me about your beleifs first. just so i can be relevant.

Yes.

yes

Hey

You don't have to eat meat to get healthy again, there are lots of vegetarians out there, you just need to do it properly. You probably dislike vegetables because you're doing the same things with them. Here are somethings you can eat to make your diet a little more exciting!

Vegetable Stir fry

What you need
?a tablespoon vegetable oil
?600g mixed stir-fry vegetables
?2 Oxo Vegetable cubes
?wok or large non-stick frying pan
How to make it
1.Pour the oil into a hot wok or frying pan and then add the vegetables.
2.Sprinkle 2 Oxo Vegetable cubes over the mixture and stir-fry for about 5 mins until vegetables are just tender.
Hints and tips
?Serve with some noodles and a dash of soy sauce.
?Garnish your stir-fry with finely chopped spring onions.

Vegetable Lasange

Ingredients
4 lasagna noodles, cooked and drained
2 medium carrots, grated
1 small zucchini, grated
1 small sweet red pepper, diced
1/2 cup chopped fresh mushrooms
1 garlic clove, minced
2 tablespoons olive or vegetable oil
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups milk
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons minced fresh basil
1/4 teaspoon onion salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
3/4 cup ricotta cheese
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
2/3 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
Directions
1.Cut 3 noodles widthwise in half. Cut remaining noodle widthwise into thirds. In a skillet, saute the carrots, zucchini, red pepper, mushrooms and garlic in oil until tender; set aside. In a saucepan, melt butter. Stir in flour until smooth; gradually add the milk. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 1-2 minutes or until thickened. Add the Parmesan cheese, basil, onion salt and garlic powder. In a bowl, combine the ricotta, egg, cheese and seasoning.
2.Spread 1/4 cup white sauce in an ungreased 7-in. x 5-in. x 1-1/2-in. (3 cup) baking dish. Cover bottom of dish with 2 large noodle pieces and one small piece. Layer with 1/3 cup mozzarella cheese, 1/2 cup white sauce, half of the vegetables and half of the ricotta cheese mixture. Repeat layers once, starting with the noodles. Top with remaining noodles and sauce.
3.Cover and bake at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes. Uncover; bake 10 minutes longer or until heated through. Let stand for 5 minutes before cutting.

Eggs also provide protien which you need to have a balanced diet.

You may also be anemic, so take anemic tablets ( go to the doctor first to check)

For snacks you can eat fruit, nuts and seeds ( good fats and protien)

Hope this helps a little

people eat meat for a reason. Animals are made for humans. We eat them, nothing wrong with it. I dont know how you can live with just veggies. Like dude steak is awesome.
