Question: Future Vegetarian, Need Advice, anyone?
Hi, recently I've decided to limit my intake on meat and foods containing animal protein. Why? Because it decreases the chance of kidney stones, promotes good health, and because it's something different and I'm tired of the same boring chicken dinner every night. I have some questions like; Where do I start? What foods can I eat? What foods can't I eat? Do processed meats count as meat? Is there a website you can recommend to help me become a vegetarian? Do you think this is a wise choice, and do you have any other suggestions? Any and all questions can be answered in the form of a comment, or by email, my email address is marcyoukers1@yahoo.com

One thing you can do is think of some of your favorite foods and then look up the vegetarian version online so search 'vegetarian tacos' if you love tacos. Another thing you can do is try different culture's foods. Many other cultures use a lot less meat in their dishes and even the dishes that do have meat can be altered easily. look into indian or chinese food.

i don't know if ther list every vegetarian option on the list though. also, if you're going out to eat with friends you might want to look online to see what they have before you go.

Just start by not eating any meat at all. There are some tofus that might strike your fancy. You can also look up vegetarian meals and vegetarian versions of your favorite foods online.

You can eat anything meat-free/ not meat-based. I'm guessing chicken noodle soup is off limits because of chicken broth.

You can't eat meat.

I've recently became vegetarian (trying to be vegan) too, so here's my personal experience:

Where do I start? - First of all, know that completely cutting out meat from the start is NOT what you want to do. You'll start craving meat even more. Instead, slowly cut types of meat from your diet.

What foods can't I eat? - This depends of what kind of vegetarian you are. Some (like me) don't eat ANY meat (fish, chicken, pork, steak, any meat that comes from an animal.). Some only don't eat raw meats. Some only eat fish. Some just don't eat pork. Decide what kind you want to be, and remove the foods you shouldn't eat from your diet.

Do processed meats count as meat? - If you mean by McDonald's hamburgers or a street-bought hotdog, then yes.

Advice? Well, just in case you are wondering or worried about craving meat, the want for meat goes away quickly. For example, I LOVED bacon before I went vegetarian. After a month or two, I caught a whiff of bacon, and it didn't smell as good as it did before.

There are lots of websites, and that way you can choose the foods that suit your tastes, budget and cooking skills best. Cutting down slowly is fine-maybe start by just not worrying too much about every food but not eat large pieces of meat, then you can gradually get used to looking for things like gelatin, meat flavor (which is usually fat or reduced stock) and such. If by processed meat you mean meat substitutes like Boca and Quorn, no, they are not meat-but they aren't that healthy and they are expensive. The bottom line is educate yourself, not just about a vegetarian diet but basic nutrition. That way, no matter what you finally choose, you will be able to make the healthiest choices for you.
