How can I best select humane eggs at the grocery store?!

Question: How can I best select humane eggs at the grocery store?
I'm against factory farming, but I do like eggs - so how to do I find some eggs that were more humanely raised?

Answers:

The labelling on the carton would give you an idea, but of course you can never be sure.

Some areas have things called farmer's markets where you can buy fresh produce, including eggs, direct from the farmers. Generally these eggs come from chickens who have been raised humanely.

The only way to be really sure is to do what a friend of mine did - she bought 2 chickens. She keeps them in her yard and they're free to roam around doing whatever ever they want. The eggs from them are fantastic!

Most places don't carry humane eggs.

However, if a carton of eggs is cage free AND certified humane, then it is humane.

Products that are certified humane are frequently inspected to insure that the animals are not mistreated.

I was lucky to find a place that sells humane eggs.

They're from a company called "Nellie's."

Well, well, hello, Winston. I wouldn't expect you around these parts. Anyway, I assume that the most humane or free-range eggs are the brands certified USDA Organic or the ones sold at health foods stores. Grocery stores like Farmers Market, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods Market, Wild Oats Marketetc might sell them.

By the way, I didn't report your answer. 2 or more of those health freaks that frequent that forum did. Also, free-range chicken or turkey probably taste better conventional meats. I haven''t tried it yet, but hope to soon.

You cannot. Humane treatment is a myth invented by the industries that exploit animals so people will be suckered into buying their crap. There is no humane treatment of animals under any abusers hand.
The animals are still being used and abused for their product regardless of what the package might say. The only way to humane treatment is liberating them from egg facilities and finding them homes in shelters and sanctuaries where they can live out the rest of their lives in peace.

vegan because animals are not property

That's going to be pretty hard, considering there are no humane ways to produce eggs in bulk. The closest you will get to "humane" eggs is to find a small, local farm that sells eggs.

Go to farmers markets if you are that interested.
