How to take up eating meat? Or should I?!

Question: How to take up eating meat? Or should I?
I've been a vegetarian all my life because my family is. In early teenage (about ten years back) I decided to try eating non-veg because I didn't find myself convinced about the religious/moral/health-related arguments posted in favor of vegetarianism. However though I forced myself to eat chicken and beef a few times, I couldn't do it. I found I was forcing myself, not enjoying it. I have it two full months and then decided its not worth it, I needn't eat it if my body doesn't like it.

Now ten years down the line, I am at the same quandry. Am I naturally a vegetarian? Or, have I grown up in such a way that I am missing out on some really good food (both taste-wise and health-wise)? Logically, all my values system and everything I stand for say that eating non-veg is not wrong at all and makes perfect sense.

Problem is, I am not able to do it. I mean, I am not able to swallow the food. Somehow it keeps coming back to my head that I am eating another animal like myself, an animal that is made of flesh, bones and blood just like I am. Most difficult is eggs - I keep getting reminded that it is some animal's menstrual waste!

Should I try to change myself to non-veg? If so, can you suggest any tips on how to go about it? Is it worth it?

Eating meat is not healthier than not eating meat; so, you're not missing out, nutritionally speaking.

Taste, however, is subjective.

Omg I think you can help me!!! But for your question don't eat what you don't like. If your body can't handle meat don't force it to try and adapt. You can still make complete proteins with certain veggie combos. As long as you are healthy don't try and change.

My question?

If you are comfortable being non-veg don't change it. I would think at thei point in your life, unless there is a health concern, there would be no reason to change. I am a meat eater. And I won't apologize for it, I love meat. But that is my choice, same as this is yours.

i was allergic to eggs until i turned 12 n dont like them anyway
especially now that places actually make like vegan cupcakes yay
i only really ate eggs scrambled 4 bfast 4 a year when i was 16
then i went lactoveg when i turned 17

lactovegetarian 5years, vegan 2months now

A man shouldnot do what a man dont want to do......

That's a great question. I really think that YOU are the only one that will be able to answer this. People are going to throw in their opinions, their two cents... but your heart, your brain and your logic will lead you to the correct choice for YOURSELF.

I was a vegetarian for a little over three years... and when I decided to start eating meat again I got very sick from red meat in particular. So if you decide to integrate meat into your diet- I suggest taking it sloooooow. Perhaps a steak or a whole piece of anything isn't a great idea to shock your system with...

I am not advocating changing your diet... but if you do... go slow.

I would start off drinking warm broth. Your digestive system is going to have to make physical changes to digest the meat proteins, so you can't just jump in with both feet. I would say soups are probably a good place to start because they have veggies mixed in, and the textures are similar. After a few days, you might try something like fish. I would definitely try bacon. The taste is amazing, you might just start with bacon bits on salad or a baked potato.
The mental part, just remember that yes you are eating another animal like you are, but that that is the natural nature of animals. Every other omnivore on the planet eats meat. And we are omnivores. Our canine teeth are designed for eating meat. If we were herbivores we would have all molars. Also remember that everything in life cycles into each other. Yes you may be eating menstrual waste, but you are when you are eating plants too. Flesh decays and fertilizes plants, and those nutrients create the plant, which is eaten by an animal and it all starts again. Everything changes from one form to another, and has been doing so for a long time.

As far as worth it, I think it is. Meat can be delicious, and there are lots of nutrients and proteins that are difficult to truly replace on an all veggie diet.
There is nothing wrong with being a vegetarian, though, and there are several things wrong with the industry of meat, so it really should be your choice.

Your body is accustomed to your vegetarian diet.
In my personal opinion, you shouldn't take it up. It's incredibly unhealthy.
Vegetarians are less likely to develop cancer, gallstones and bladder stones, heart disease, osteoporosis, and other diseases that slaughterhouses don't treat their animals for.
It's a healthy choice. Humans NATURALLY don't eat meat. Eat what you are accustomed to. You don't have to do it because of religion, morals, or anything else, do it because it's what your body wants/needs.

Hope I helped!

Hey, people are vegetarians for different reasons, so although you may not feel strongly against killing animals for food, the reasons you have identified are just as valid reasons to stay vegetarian.

If you don't enjoy eating meat, then there is no need to force yourself. If you find the idea of it a bit disturbing, then that's your answer. You're right, it IS flesh! Your natural instinct seems to be against you eating this food. Maybe you should just stay vegetarian?

If it feels wrong to eat meat, and you don't particularly enjoy eating it, then I'd suggest perhaps it isn't worth it?

If you like vegetarian food then just stay a vegetarian.

You shouldn't eat meat, if it's making you sick.

There are so many imitation meat products that there is no need to eat meat.

Boca, Morningstar Farms, Lightlife, Amy's Kitchen, Annie's Homegrown, Yves, Tofurky, and Worthington have great products that can be found at Stop & Shop, Pathmark, Shop Rite, and Whole Food stores/health food stores.

Burgerking has a BK Veggie burger.

You've just been well conditioned by your family, is all!
It's a psych thing.
The more often you put the foods that you have an aversion to on your plate and eat them (even a little), the more good experience you get with them (its called aversion therapy) and eventually realize your original idea about them is wrong.
Eggs are NOT menstrual waste -- chickens DON'T HAVE periods!!!
EVERY egg their body makes gets put into a calcium shell in case it gets fertilized. EVERY SINGLE ONE. They lay eggs every day of their adult lives.

Your not missing out on anything good because you simply don't enjoy it. Why force yourself to eat it? You want to enjoy it? Thats why your doing that, but you simply cannot enjoy it. It's more of a psychological reason. Sure you can condition yourself to get the meat down, but if you really don't like it and it makes you sick, why bother?

I only eat what I enjoy. I see no point in shoving food down my throat that makes me gag.

I think that you should stay a vegetarian because it is more healthy that eating meat all the time. You need proteins, that is the only reason why eating meat is "healthier" that fruits and vegetables. But you can replace meat and eggs with other foods that are high in proteins like bananas, dairy, beans, nuts and seeds.

You're obviously brain washed, but I'd never tell you to eat something that makes you uncomfortable. The only thing animal products give you that are not available in a WELL PLANNED, WELL BALANCED plant based diet is vitamin B12. Whether you eat meat or not, biologically, you're an omnivore and your body can digest meat and veggies. Your mind is a different story.

BUT, if you're healthy and happy as a vegetarian, stay a vegetarian. Eat what makes you comfortable. I do. I'm a meat eater, but if you don't like or want meat, don't eat it.

I know exactly what you mean :) I used to be a vegetarian but eventually decide that I didn't see anything wrong with eating free range organic meats. It was pretty hard to eat meat again but you will eventually get used to it enough that youll like the taste. I don't think you will get many legit answers, mostly just people telling you meat is wrong. If you see nothing wrong with eating non-veg food then i suggest keep trying to make yourself eat it. If i where you I would leave eggs till last because of the strong taste and texture. start with chicken soup or something else with a very mild flavor. yogurt should be an easy one or really foods made with diary. if you eat a little each day of mild tasting foods then I bet you will start to like the taste sometime soon.

Don't let people tell you that eating another animal is immoral or against the norm or anything. That would be like condeming a wolf for his diet. People find that being a vegetarian seems right in society today, because humans have made a business out of processing animals for food. Hundreds and thousands of years ago, and still today in some places of the world, you needed to fight for food, including killing the nearest meaty animal, to survive.
Humans have evolved physically to eat animals. That is what the canine teeth are for- tearing into meat. But yes, we do have molars for chewing things, specifically plant life.
I have had some of the same thoughts you have had about eggs as well, though there are some cultures even where fertilized aggs are considered a delicacy, being eaten after the duck or chicken inside has had time to partially mature. I wouldn't care to try that, and I'm not even a vegetarian.
As for missing out on foods being exclusively vegetarian, yes that can happen. There have been advances is food processing that have allowed people to make vegetarian pepperoni and other foods that taste like the real thing, but there are still plenty of foods that they are far from reproducing.
However, all of this depends on your personal taste, though it seems more like a mental conflict to you. I think you COULD enjoy meats, but you are thinking too much about the means that it has been provided to you. You can just let it come in time, you don't need to force yourself to fit in with the carnivorous folk :P
