Just turned vegetarian?!

Question: Just turned vegetarian?
I just turned vegetarian on the 8th, for health, aesthetic and ethical reasons. But my family aren't exactly the most supporting. My twin says that I won't stick it out, and others say that I desperately need protein (6"3" and muscular). I live in Ireland, that really the best place to be one but at least there's quorn. Does no one think of horses? I tried telling them about the health reasons (They would never listen to ethical or aethetic reasons), and how the human body isn't exactly suited to eating meat. What is the best way to make people just understand and accept it?

Answers:

You shouldn't feel like you have to explain this to everyone, they don't change their minds. No one respects my opinion for being vegetarian but it's cause people are just ignorant of why you chose to be. I don't think you need to worry about other peoples opinion if they don't worry about yours in a respectful manor.

Well, first you have to get your argument right. The human body is exactly suited to eat meat, animal products and veggies. Telling someone otherwise shows either your not knowledgeable about humans or dishonest. Neither one will encourage people to "buy" your vegetarian lifestyle. Humans need vitamin B12 and it is ONLY available in animal products: milk, dairy, meat. Who says we need B12? The vegetarian Resource Group (VRG), VeganHealth, the Vegan Society, and any nutritionist. You can take pills, shots or eat highly fortified foods, but otherwise you need to eat animal products.

As a vegetarian, you may be eating eggs and dairy. But "does no one think of" the chickens or the cows?

Some people just don't want to accept things. You really can't blame them, most people are raised eating meat and taught that it is essential. Just eat properly to stay healthy and then they will know it's possible to be healthy without meat.

You can get protein other places. Yogurt or supplements, for instance. As long as you're not trying to have the muscle mass of a gorilla, it won't be terribly hard to get enough protein with a little extra effort.

I bet people will come to understand and accept it after you've been doing it for a little while. Its just a pretty drastic lifestyle change to go through, but they'll get used to it.

i say screw being different have a big fat juicy irish stew and dumplings...mate you know you want to! my whole family are irish the foods great.
