A few simple questions about eating healthy, "natural" diet?!

Question: A few simple questions about eating healthy, "natural" diet?
I was wondering if flour and/or sugar are considered to be "natural"? I'm trying to steer away from processed foods and towards more unprocessed, natural things. If they aren't, what are some good substitutes (if any) to use in baking?

Thanks! :)

It depends on how far you are going to take 'natural'. Some natural diets only avoid dyes and preservatives, and others try not to eat anything with more than 5 ingredients, or anything that could come from a factory.

Sugar is not healthy. It is empty of nutrients and antioxidants. Popular natural sweeteners would be raw honey, maple syrup, and agave nectar.

White fortified flour is definitely not natural, but whole wheat pastry flour (regular whole wheat flour amkes everything dense, so whole wheat pastry flour is good for baking) could be considered healthy. You could also use other flours, like quinoa flour, rice flour, chickpea flour, or soy flour, to sub in for part of the flour, though these too would probably change the texture of baked goods.

I highly recommend the book 'Skinny *****' if you're interested in clean eating. White flour and sugar are highly processed and really not very good for you.

Great alternatives for white flour would be whole wheat flour, soy flour or quinoa flour, which you should be able to get in your local grocery store.
My favorite alternative for sugar is Agave nectar, which is SUPER tasty. It's made from cacti and can be used anywhere you'd use sugar.

anything that is processed or refined wouldn't be considered natural. there are different types of flour and sugar, i dont know too much about them but you can google for more information or check out a health food store. I do know that you can use whole wheat flour for baking, however. and a good trick for baking is using apple sauce instead of sugar. My mother recently made really delicions banana muffins with whole wheat flour and applesauce, you can find lots of good healthy recipes online or in cook books or you could even just substitute the flour and sugar in your favourite recipes...hope this helps

Sugar should be use in moderation (rarely)
Highly refined flour is not good for you. If you are going to eat wheat products (Whole wheat) products are the best.
