Have you ever not knowingly eaten something not veg, then later learned it wasn't?!

Question: Have you ever not knowingly eaten something not veg, then later learned it wasn't?
So I used to have this weird energy drink addiction, even though I knew it was bad for me,, so I stopped drinking them. Yesterday my friend gave me some in a cup, and told me it was just grape soda. So I drank it and said it tasted really sweet and she said it's just probably cuz I'm used to drinking diet sodas. I kept sipping it and I didn't really have that much but I could tell I had a stomach ache so I slapped her (like a friend does lol) and said "this is totally an energy drink! what kind..?" and she shows me the can and right on it, it says Ginseng and Taurine. I gagged. taurine?? why would you put that in a drink! Why is it even necessary, that's just gross! Well I'm a vegan so I started getting kinda bothered and I was also getting sick from it anyways before. Plus, the ingredient itself makes me grossed out. I've been sick all day,, anyways, vegetarians and vegans, has this ever happened, where something like meat or dairy was in something you consumed and you were told (or thought) it was veg? How'd you react and how did you feel?

Hi... I'm confused because I thought Taurine was just a mineral. All I knew about it was cats have to have it in their diets. Hm!...
Anyway as a vegetarian I ate many fast food and restaurant fries before I woke up and realized they are fried in the same oil they use to fry the meat containing foods in. My family tries to trick me all the time. My grandpa made homemade bread last month and blatantly lied to me about it not having any lard in it. Gullibly I believed him until the next day my mom tells me he was lying to me. but that's not the worst of it. My dad lied to me for 3 years about his soup having only soybean oil in it. The "soybean oil" is real butter. >:/
I should be mad, but I'm really not all that mad, just thankful I found out.

Yes, there's so many things with hidden animal ingredients that it's bound to happen.

When I first became a vegetarian, I ate frosted poptarts(which have gelatin), Kraft cheese(which has animal enzymes) and french fries from McDonalds(which has beef flavoring).

I rarely eat anything that has hidden animal ingredients now, though, because I'm always checking the ingredients and looking up anything I'm not sure about.

Yeah :( My parents made this soup, and I didn't realize there were tiny little baby shrimp in there...until I saw it! I shrieked lol, it was terrible. I am much more careful now.

Also, in beginning stages of vegetarianism, I never realized that some cheese contained animal rennet making in non-vegetarian, but also jello...the gelatin in it (which should have been a no-brainer.)

Vegetarian for 3 years, vegan for 1.

yeah, i went to this restaurant once and asked the people there if a rice dish i wanted had any kind of meat broth (specifying chicken and fish too) in it and the man said no. it tasted funny so i didn't eat much but i went back later with a friend and asked again and the person working there asked the chief and he said that it had chicken broth in it.

I haven't really had such an experienced thankfully, but I sympathise with you. It frustrates me that meat-supporting people have this false, stereotypical idea of vegetarians as preachy and self-important. So often it is they that are bigoted and prejudiced in their ideas against vegetarians.

Well, I've never actually had someone give me something non-veg, but when I first went vegetarian, I didn't know that glycerin was in granola bars or that d3 (in OJ and margarine) was not vegetarian- as soon as I found out I stopped eating those.

Have you never had grape soda before. It doesnt taste anything like energy drink.

I think this happens to most ppl though sooner or later.

Just move on, what are you going to do about it?

Why would you care about taurine? It's just an amino acid!!!
It can be chemically produced from ANYTHING!
What's the big deal?

Yes I have, I ate panera's broccoli and cheddar soup only to find out later that it was made with chicken broth. I felt sick later that day.

I would have felt betrayed, if my friend knew I was a vegan, and gave me something that had it in it.

Yeah... chicken stock.. Ugh.. Never again.
btw, taurine can be synthetic, it doesn't always come from an animal.

Recognize that it was a mistake and move on. What's done cannot be undone.

no idea

It is bound to happen because many things have hidden animal products in them. Don't feel bad because it happens to almost everyone. As a vegetarian I ate french fries from McDonalds and different restaurants and I didn't know they cooked it in oil also used to cook meats and used other meat flavorings. Just be more careful about ingredients and don't worry about it. Just move on and be sure to not drink that again. Also, don't get mad at your friend but tell her that you cannot drink that and try to explain it to her without getting upset. That's what I would do. Hope that helps :)

Vegetarian

I just drank Glaceau Vitamin Water Zero. Has a few things from animals in it, that I didn't see until I got home. What I get for drinking one on the drive home.

I ate mcdonalds fries. Only two though before I stopped to read online about them.

Other than that, I haven't since I became vegan. I used to be a vegetarian, and have lactaid milk with cereal. I've moved on to soy and almond for a while now.

Yes, unfortunately. The first 2 months of my vegetarianism I ate Jell-O. I had NO idea what gelatin was made from. When I found out I was so pissed. I immediately threw away the 5 or so boxes I had of it.

I also ate noodles cooked in chicken broth. I was not happy finding that one out after eating it.

Middle of cooking a casserole that required sour cream, I discovered gelatin was in the ingredients. UGH!

But the one that angered me the most was when I was eating some peanuts my boyfriend bought and had at his apartment before we lived together. Gelatin. IN PEANUTS! Really?!! Peanuts?! So upset.
