Calling all Vegetarians, I need help.?!
So I made the decision to go vegetarian. I have a few problems. I am 15 years old, and my parents are BIG meat eaters, so how can I tell them without them "not letting me" be vegetarian. Also, I need some tips on some quick and easy lunches I can make for school.
I have already gone to peta2.com and that has really helped, but I believe I need more "tips" on how to be vegetarian.
Like can I eat eggs? What about bread?
Thank you SO Much!
Tamara (:

Hi, good for you!
I'm sure if you explain to your parents how you feel about this they won't force you to keep eating meat. As long as you show them that you've done your research and know how to stay healthy they'll probably be supportive. Maybe you could print off some info on healthy eating as a vegetarian so they'll know they don't have to worry? It'll also help if you're open and can talk them through your reasons so they'll have more understanding of why you're doing this.
Easy lunches can be things like a wholemeal wrap with kidney beans, salsa and veggies, pasta salad or any kind of non-meat sandwich. You can also bring along some nuts and a piece of fruit for extra nutrition.
Yes, most vegetarians eat eggs. Contrary to popular myth, these are not a baby chicken!
Bread is also vegetarian so you don't have to worry about that.
Good luck with it.

I became vegetarian at 15, though my mum was really worried about my health. My family are also big meat eaters!
Firstly, you could say you want to try it out for a week or maybe a month, to see what it is like- this is how I started and I've not eaten meat since. Secondly, get down to your local library and borrow some vegetarian cooking/recipe books.
What you eat depends on how dedicated you are. A vegan won't eat any animal products at all, while a pesceterian will eat fish.
Dairy products are fine, though check the packaging. Cheese is made using rennet, which is either animal based (the lining of the cows stomach) or vegetable based (from yeast). Also, innocent things such as sweets and chocolate mousse and other desserts can be a no-no if they have gelling agent gelatine (boiled animal bones) in, as opposed to pectin (fruit based).
I must say I'm the healthiest member of my family and definitely not underweight or lacking in vitamins! I rarely get ill and for example I can shake off colds pretty quickly, while the rest of the family seem to find theirs linger on.
There are different types of vegetairians ones who eat dairy and eggs, seafood and ones who don't it's up to you. I'm not a vegetairian but I would suggest eating nuts, lentils, beans, tofu for protein. And lots of grains like oats, barley, rice, pasta, vegggies, fruits, soymilk to be healthy. You can eat grain products like bread and eggs if you want many do but if you want to not it's called being vegan so u would have to eat rice and breads made with soymilk and stuff. Some vegetairans eat seafood too but that's not being vegan. It's up to you it's a personal decision
You can be a vegetarian and eat eggs, however you'll be classified as an ovo-vegetarian. Which basically means you eat eggs but not meat. You can eat bread because bread is made of wheat. Tell your parents why you want to be a vegetarian and how it will affect you. Tell them that they can eat as much meat as they want but you will not be subjected to this for _____ reason.
Some food:
Cucumber+Tomato+ Hummus sandwich or salad
Lettuce, Beans and Olive oil salad

Tell your parents something along the lines of "I don't want to eat meat. I do not care if you do, I just choose not too. I want the be a vegetarian."
I am in the EXACT same situation. I'm 15, and home to a family of meat eaters.
Anyways!
Ok, vegetarian isn't the same as vegan. To be a vegetarian, you do not eat animal flesh or parts.
Vegan (Like myself) doesn't eat ANY animal products (including milk, eggs, cheese, etc.), wear wool or furs, or use anything that is taken from living creatures.
So, if you are vegan, then you can replace eggs (when baking) with bananas, treacle, and other sorts of foods. As far as fried eggs, deviled eggs: no. Bread, OF COURSE. Bread is made out of wheat and whole grains. Not animals.
Soy milk, almond milk, rice milk-- all milk replacements.
Milk chocolate- no, dark chocolate = YES. (in most cases)
Well, there's SOME of the hundreds of replacements for vegans.
Vegan.
